Are there any huge steps that everyminute.org is taking to change the world of mental illness and how can we, as individuals really contribute to the cause other than joining this group and signing the petition? -

There a great need to incorporate spiritual development, support and healing to the progress of recovery in mental illness. If the fact that there are many religions is an issue, bring in many different religions to support centers and teach diversity at the same time. We can't expect medicine to work by itself. 9 times out of 10, it does not work by itself. Spiritual practice is lacking in society, and it can play a huge role in giving someone stability and making them a stable person. -

I take issue with the word "defeat" because it's such a negative word and so many of us with mental illness deal with negativity on a daily basis. I would love to see a more positive statement of your intent, which I fully support.

Nancy, I think you have an excellent point about the word "defeat" in our tagline "Uniting to Defeat Mental Illness." It is negative, but it is also active and positive in the sense that we are now on the offensive to tackle and fight back against illnesses that are definitely at war with us. What does everyone else think about it? Should our tagline be something more optimistic like, "Uniting to Defend Mental Health?" Or should it be something completely different? I would appreciate any feedback to Nancy's concern. Thank you very much, Nancy, for expressing your thoughts! -

Delissa, our huge step to change the world of mental illness is to do something that has never been done before. We are going to unite all of America's mental health organizations as well as the 57 million Americans that are diagnosed with a mental disorder. We are taking the first couple steps of starting a true grassroots movement that will amplify the voices of those in need focusing our efforts into one loud shout, "It is time to fix this thing." It is time for objective diagnosis, individualized treatment, prevention and ultimately, it is time for a cure.
Delissa, as an individual, you can contribute to the cause by signing and getting other individuals to come together and sign. An individual can do nothing by themselves to change the world of mental illness, but millions of individuals together can make a difference. So, short answer to your question is that you as an individual need to get other individuals to tell other individuals to tell others to unite. Together, we can change the world of mental illness. And we will. -

Hi everyminute, How can I help my birthmom with her schizophrenia? She won't stop hearing voices. I really need someone to talk to. I have been depressed lately and crying a lot too. Dawn -

Dawn,
Go ahead and check out the schizophrenia and depression resources on our website http://www.everyminute.org/resourc... Also, local support from a services provider is an essential thing for wellness. Check out the tab "Services Locater" and click on your state to find help near you. Hope this helps.
