Lump where shot was

Posted on 09/04/08, 09:06 pm
Does anyone's dog ever get a lump where they received a shot? My dog always gets these, but they usually disappear, eventually. This time it didn't and it appears to be getting bigger, but I can't be sure. He received his shot in May. I don't know if I should take him to the vet or not.

I say take him to the vet. I don't know anything about this lump thing, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Can you call your vet and ask? Or I'm a little late replying - do you have an update? It seems like a long time if the shot was in May.

I never noticed this on my pets but my son always has a bump for a few days after he gets his shots. ;-)

Thanks for your replies. I haven't had a chance to take him to the vet ,as too many things happening right now. But as soon as I do, I will post a follow up. Thanks again!

I brought Peppie to the vet on Saturday. She took a sample of what was in the lump and called me today. She said it appears to be a reaction to the shot and caused chronic inflammation as well as having fatty matter in it. She said worst case scenario is that it could potentially turn into cancer. She said they usually recommend it being removed. She didn't give me a price but said they would email me a quote. She said I could watch it to see if it gets bigger but states it's better to remove it Because my dog has problem with enlarged liver and they have been watching it, they had recommended I have a thyroid test done for Peppie. I did and now she said it is low/normal. Normal is between .8 to 4 and he is at .85. She said I could have the Free T4 test done, which is supposed to be more accurate than the T4 test he had and will cost an additional $55. These other tests already cost $133. I am torn about what to do.

Wow, I am surprised it caused such a big problem. How much would the surgery be? I'm not sure I understand - if he has that test done, could it mean he doesn't need surgery? Or would it still be iffy? I hate taking chances so I might just go w/ the surgery. But then again, I just spent almost $3000 on my 13 yr old. I just don't like living with regrets. How old is he?

I found out it will cost me $532 for them to remove the lump and to clean his teeth. They said it is about the same price to just remove the lump by itself, so they include the teeth cleaning too (weird). I haven't called them back yet, but believe I will have this done for him, as I too am always afraid to take chances. Peppie is 10 1/2 years old.

Actually that price doesn't sound bad. Its over $100 to have teeth cleaned and it was around $300 extra for my dog's lump to be removed - and she was already going to be under anesthisia for her leg surgery. I say go for it if you feel the vet is trustworthy. My other dogs lived to be 17 & 19 so he is still young'un

COULD YOU TAKE HIM TO A HOMOEOPHATIC VET,I HAVE ONE FOR MY DOGS,IT COULD BE POSSIBLE THAT WITH A REMEDY,IT CAN GET HEALED ,I HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS WITH HOMOEOPHATI,IT JUST TAKES A BIT LONGER.HOPE YOU CONSIDER IT.WAY DID HE HAVE THE SHOT ?THERE IS NO NEED TO VACCINATE EVERY YEAR,THERE IS A LOT OF VETS THAT DO NOT AGREE.WISH YOU WELL,HOPE HE GET WELL SOON,LUCY.

I brought Peppie to a vet who says he practices homeopathy as well as regular meds for the dog. Just the consultation part of that cost me a lot of money. I don't have the total cost but it was so much per 15 min. or so. I had orig. brought him because we thought he might have Cushings Disease and I was looking for other opinions. Then I had asked about giving him shots every time and he said the only way to tell was to run tests to see if he had immunities, which again cost more than the shots would cost. In the end, I didn't feel he was a real Homeopathic Vet, but haven't found any others in my area. I wish I could find one because I believe like you, that he shouldn't be vaccinated every year. It's like with this lump. I haven't brought him in yet because I am still torn. What if he really doesn't need it? Will I be causing him pain for nothing? Could this cause more problems down the road, or what if I don't do it and it becomes cancerous? I do appreciate everyone's comments. Thanks!

DEAR friend, from what you are saying this vet doesn't sound he is preactising homoeopathy,i do not know the law in America,I live in London, but here a homoeopathic vet,is not allowed to use conventional drugs, infact I have 2 vet for my doggys,.I THINK YOU should check if this vet is registered with the ''homoeopathic vet sociaty''to make sure.I take my dog there to try and avoid drugs. Please get a second opinion, and don'say anything, wait for the vet to tell you what is wrong,i am sending web of my vet for you to look.LOVE TO YOU AND PEPPIE,LUCY,PETS OSCAR,CHARLIE...
