Enviromental Allergies in Dogs?

Anyone else have a dog with enviromental allergies?

My Weimaraner every August/September through January/February starts getting itchy all over, itchy ears, licking paws to the point they are red, hairless, swollen.

I am giving her Benadryl now, will sometimes do Prednisone, sometimes needs antibiotics, sometimes anti-fungals, foot washes with anti-bacterials, steroid spray for feet.

Anyone else have a dog like this?? It's so frustrating. I know ragweed and pollen is high where I live right now, but she is also allergic to Ash Trees, and I have 3 in my backyard, so I wonder if the Fall of leaves might have a role in this too...??

I live in Florida and battle this all year with my Cairn Terrier. The hotter it gets, the more difficult. The 2 things I have done with the help of a vet and another specialist---first of all K-9 Avantix-for fleas because even just one bite can start a whole vicious cycle of bitting. ALso changed the food to Life's Abundance which can be ordered on line because there are no preservatives which are not only deadly but cause allergies. Both of these steps have helped greatly. Vet explained to me that they can be allergic to a lot of things and if you can work on some and eliminate them, it really eases up the resulting scratching.

I've messed around with food too, but have found that it doesn't matter, no matter what, come near the Fall, she gets these symptoms. And, the food is so pricy! I had her on a Vegetarian Diet for like 2 years, then just switched her this year to Purina One Large Breed Dog, and there is nothing in it she's allergic to.

I almost did allergy shots with her, but the Vet never ordered them for me...UGH!

The Benadryl seems to be helping with the itching right now.

If he started scratching even more when you changed the food, then for sure he was allergic to something in that particular food. Check out the ingredients. Preservatives in dog food can really make them itchy. As far as flea medications----they all need some protection against fleas. Some work better than others for each dog. They are as difficult as us, huh???
