I'm new and love dogs!!!

I love dogs and had dogs as a child. Since my husband's death five plus years ago I am now left alone completely disabled. I have my many pet birds but want so much to find a small lap dog that would love to call me "mommy" and have me pamper and love them. It would bring such joy and healing into my life. The shelter does not have any small dogs for adoption and I'm afraid to purchase one from someone I don't know, and I don't know very many people at all since my husband's death, for fear that they may be breeding just for money. I would love a small dog of any age, etc. Just one in need of lots and lots of love is all.

I sure hope you find your doggie. Most breeders are breeding for the money but most of them don't mistreat the dogs or anything. Now if you buy one from a pet store there's a good chance it came from a puppy mill. I say maybe you should go ahead and get one from a breeder. Dogs do wonders for your mental and physical health.

Thank you for this helpful information. How should I go about finding a good breeder?
    Thanks

I'm not sure. I always met the people and went to their homes where they kept the mom and/or dad, and checked out that dog and see if they have the kind of temperment I wanted as that can be genetic. Just be picky.

Dont know where you live but if you look up something called Craigslist on the internet they have it broken down by cities and towns and lots of the time you can get a dog on there for decent money, since your not looking for a dog that has to be a full breed sometimes in Craigslist they have people that have to move and find homes for their dog because their new apartment wont let them have a dog...etc....just do a search engine for Craigslist.

There are many rescue groups for any type of breed you might be looking for.

I have looked into this and was left a bit confused as to some of the people involved with selling their rescued dogs for $250.00 each. And when I inquired about the rescue situation of the dog I was interested in it left me very concerned about this "rescue" person and how she goes about getting these smallset of two brother/sister puppies, purebred animals that were purchased by a lady in San Diego, CA and when this lady brought these two purebred puppies home that she had just paid $800,00 for her husband told her that she had to get rid of this two new puppies that cost $800.00 by giving them to the local dog pound. When I inquired as to how these two purebred puppies had made it from the dog pound in San Diego up here to Stockton, CA the explanation left me feeling that something was not right about the whole operation. Perhaps this was an isolated incident but I am now cautious of these so called "rescue" operations that have several different types of pure-bred, expensive puppies available for sale. It felt like I was being given a huge red flag warning me that something just was not right about what was going on. I may be wrong but it just was a bit too strange to make sense to me. Until I can learn more and am satisfied with the answers to my questions and I don't feel that something is just not right about the situation I will not adopt from this person. I have not yet followed up with checking out other private "rescue" situation but I'm a bit done in by this last experience I had. I have checked with the larger, well known animal rescue groups in our area and they never have small dogs available for adoption. I began to wonder if it was possible that in many cases these small dogs are being adopted by someone that turns around and sells these small, in high demand dogs for a profit. All I wanted was a "mutt" and age, gender and breed did not matter to me in the least. Not sure about any of this yet and hope it all turns out to be as it appears but I have learned that appearances can be very deceiving in many situations. I will have to take more time and investigate and learn more about this entire "rescue" business. Just too much did not add up is all.

I placed an ad on Craigslist explaining my situation and the home and care the animal will receive. This is a really big learning experience for me. I did not realize going into this wanting just a small dog to love and pamper would become so complicated.

Have you tried petfinder.com? They have many choices of rescued dogs and you can look through the classified section as well. We found my dad's bichon from the classified section. Best of luck.
