Calm waters

As a child, I look into the deep.
I saw my reflection upon
the shimmering surface of the inky black waters.
Amazed as children often are.
Something came.
Out of the still, calm waters.
Something evil.
Aweful and wretched.
For me and me alone did it come.
All I remember is the cold.
Chilling to the bone.
All around me, above and below.
Multitudes of voices,
Shouting, screaming.
They have teeth and claws.
Ripping at my flesh.
Tearing it from the bone.
Untill I'm nothing.
Just a naked soul.
Their vile, feted breath,
Entering what's left of my lungs.
My only air.
Cold steel on my wrists and ankles.
Shakles dragging me deeper and deeper.
No strength to fight back.
I must fight!
I must find air!
I must see the light of the moon again!
I must break these bonds, and swim!
Away from the voices!
Away from the musty stink of their breath!
With all I have in me,
I struggle.
I fight.
I break the chains.
Then the surface of the water.
It's only then do I see
how far from the land I've been taken.
Now I must journey back to where I was.
I have learned a valuable lesson.
When I reach the land again,
I will remember
The greatest evil often lives
In the calm waters.
I saw my reflection upon
the shimmering surface of the inky black waters.
Amazed as children often are.
Something came.
Out of the still, calm waters.
Something evil.
Aweful and wretched.
For me and me alone did it come.
All I remember is the cold.
Chilling to the bone.

I must fight!

This is a really great poem! As a survivor of child abuse I totally feel you. I have gotten over what happened to me but I am so far away from the person I should have been if this hadn't happened to me. And I'll never be fooled again into thinking love and abuse can coexist, like in the last two lines. -

For me personally it's about when I kinda' went off the deep end into schitzophrenia (though I'm not sure, never saw a doc about it, but there were about 5 or 6 different voices in my head telling me to do things. However that's what's great about poetry, it's all subjective, it can mean different things to different people. Thanks for the support all, fell free to download what ever I write and distibute free of charge. It's for whoever want's it. -
