I had a hard time finding an atheist support group. Not a lot of us, is there?

I was inspired to search for an atheist group today because:

I was feeling really shitty today and then I saw someone mentioned something about believing in a higher power. And suddenly I felt extremely happy to be atheist.

Yes, finally, haha. It's taken a while but now there are people starting to join this group. Maybe if I knew how to advertise it we could find more. I belong to various atheist, freethinker groups so it seems like there are a lot of us but in the 'real world' we are few I guess, in the US anyway.

I think there are plenty in the US, just not on DS for some reason :P I think a lot of people with severe problems use God as a crutch.. and sometimes it's understandable when you've been through hell and have no one to look to. Sometimes you need to feel like someone else is in control.

I was in the hospital a while back and I met a lady in the psych ward who was severely abused as a child. She was raised an atheist and she said she could run circles around any Christian... until one day she realized that most Christians seemed to take so much comfort in their God and decided to give all of her problems up to God. When you have nothing else, you turn to an imaginary friend. That's why I think you find so many Christians here on DS.

I have found a few support groups for atheists and others that have no particular religion or just don't follow orginized religion. Just type atheist in the search bar on here. I am a member of some.

Over the years even before the Internet I've been involved with various atheists groups. If you'd like to know more let me know. But I'm sure as Every 1 said, you can find them. But there wasn't one on this DS site but there were lots of people talking about faith, so that's why we have this group for us now.
    : )
