Obesity

I saw a brief spot on CNN today regarding the trend of citizens becoming overweight and obese. Some of the commentary referred to people as being "fat" or having "fat children".

Is "fat" a hurtful term, or is it an accurate term. if the stats were accurate that 1 in 3 is approaching obesity then, 1/3 of the population was hurt by the news report.

And, if "fat" is hurtful, why isn't "thin" a hurtful thing to say to someone?

" Accurate.
And thin isn't a hurtful thing to say to someone [in general] due to societal conditioning. "

" right, if fat was in, the thin folks would have their feelings hurt. I have always said if I could be a fat happy person the hell with thin, but I have chronic health problems, so that will never be.

Marilyn Monroe was a size 14, and by todays standards, that is fat.

DAMn twiggy, she started all the thin craze! "

" Some heavy people happily call themselves "fat" and I cringe even when they're calling themselves that. It must be societal conditioning. I would think the more correct opposite of thin would be thick, which is a word some people use.
Physicians use the word "fat" a lot, because they're dealing with excess fat on the body and therefore describing a condition. If you're carrying a lot of fatty tissue, you're fat. I still don't feel comfortable when I hear people calling themselves or others that.
It sounds like a negative label to me. "
