McCain linked to private nazi group in Iran-Contra case Presidential nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair. McCain's ties are facing renewed scrutiny after his campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago. The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe. The council's founder, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain was launching his political career in Arizona. Both candidates have the ability to make slanderous and extremely weak accusations. Linda just gave us an example of one that would target Sen. McCain. Mudslinging is being used by both candidates. I observe that Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are using unsubstantiated accusations more frequently. To my chagrin, the crowds are slinging hate words right back. Gov. Palin has said that Sen. Obama has been palling around with terrorists. So "traitor" and other unsavory words have been shouted at rallies. I can't imagine that at Obama's rallies people will shout "Nazi" or "New Reich!" or "Heil McCain" Too much hate is being tossed around. This behavior is devisive. As a nation we are called to be 'indivisable with liberty and justice for all'

Good post. There's enough crap out there. We've got issues to deal with and our two candidates offer a substantial enough differences on policy.
Speaking of, does anybody here have a clear idea about either candidates economic policy? I imagine both groups are thinking on the fly right now.

You are right Sharon - I wasn't sure of the information at first - but this was on Meet The Press with Tom Brokaw a few weeks ago.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom became controversial when it became the public cover for the White House's covert operation to fund the Contras without congressional approval, with Singlaub working in secret with Oliver North to raise money from foreign governments. Clearly this man hasn't told us about himself and his connections - but he has the audacity to question Obama about his connections. Can we leave Obama, and his purported connections to a terrorist, alone now?

First we have pastorgate, now tenuous connectiongate.
Every time folks try to tar Barak, the story on on the Republican side, Palin's connection to a traitorous succession group, winds up being even worse! What is that game, the six degrees of kevin bacon? It is actually the six degrees of separation. If I remember correctly, it is the idea that every person on this earth is separated from any other by six aquantences or family members. Thus we have Dick Cheney related to Barak Obama (they are distant cousins). Gads, to think that if we were to go back enough generations, somewhere down the line I am also related to Dick Cheney! The horror, the horror!!! Oh man, that's just too vile to contemplate!

Linda, I have heard that this is why McCain did not bring up Ayers in the last debate. What I heard is that McCain knew that if he brought up Ayers, not only would Obama have a chance to bring out how tenuous any link between them is, but he would also have an opening to ask McCain about this Council - where McCain would have a much harder time trying to explain his involvement.
My opinion, this should be brought out in the media as much as the Ayers thing is. I'm glad you posted this. I learned something. That said, I am really glad that Obama is running his campaign in a way that he is not getting into this negative stuff like McCain is. I think that is because Obama actually has a message and doesn't have to resort to this kind of thing. What do you think?
