Video Game Addiction, a lifes story.

I've played video games since I was 12 years old, to extreme's most people would be shocked at, 13 hours a day or more on many occasions and regularly. I've blown off good jobs, appointments, high grades on university courses, lost interest in good relationships, the works. If you have a friend in your life playing all day and denying video game addiction exists, that was probably me at one time.
I don't think its enough to say your addicted to video games, I think the whole subject needs to be looked at slightly differently. If your like me you've made video games a hugely substantial part of your daily life, not a half an hour chemical high that you have to finance for the other 24. Its an ongoing continual reinforcement of the addictions positive qualities and as your experiences outside of video games are so limited, you get very little negative feedback from the experience or friends who otherwise might talk some sense into you. Here is what i've tried: Selling every PC game I own, i've done this at least 4 times now, its never been enough. Tony Robbins, again for 30 days I felt great but after the program, the years of this behavior come back naturally. Not using the computer for a week, then two etc. I remember when I was younger and we had family holidays, the best time to do this is after a period away from the computer already, on holiday when you've had positive enjoyment from some other activity. Its easier not to play when your feeling good from something else! I really am good at what I do, do anything long enough and you get good and it feels great but its cost me physically in my eyesight, pain in my wrists, a small social circle and long periods of unemployment, you name it. I guess what i'm saying is, if your young right now and have a lot of potential, picture a slightly overweight guy, bad wrists, bad eyesight, poor social skills and thats where you'll be in 10 years if you play all day every day. I'm making one final attempt to sort things out, i've gone back into business and once again ditched all my computer games and heck even taken up some exercise :). When I first went back into business I had to actual reason myself it was for the goal of one day being able to play all day without financial concern or anything else getting in the way, sad but true. I do genuinely enjoy myself so much, its instant and constant gratification when your competitively very good in an fps or rts, I get very physical tense at the thought of never having that kind of thrill in my life again. I have a really good friend whom is always telling me I need to get my act together, he's right of course but one thing he said has always stuck in my mind: 'You don't do anything unless its instantly gratifying do you.' You know what I've never heard anything so true said about me. Well i'll stop this little speech here, just to finally say good luck to anyone else on this forum and in the world who reads this. jesus this scares me. I'm 17, i've been playing videogames since i was about 9 or 10. But for the past 2-3 years i've been playing videogames for about 16-20 hours a day.. I dont want to have sore wrists and bad eye sight =(.

I'm glad it shocked you a bit :), that was my goal I guess.
I was a very healthy, sporty individual too, 20x20 vision, weight lifted the works. I can still focus well on distant objects but I have a severe case of over sensitive eyes, can't stand the sun at all when its in my direction and on many days gust of wind or cold weather is enough. I don't think the condition is irreversible, at least thats what a specialist has told me, but as i've developed no natural resistance or tolerance to the elements as it were, it will be a slow healing process. To put it bluntly, yeah at 16-20 hours a day your wrists will suffer from rsi its just really a matter of time, i've done that myself when I was younger. You'll either get unsteady hands or pains in your wrist and fingers. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule but those exceptions aren't playing fast paced games at 16-20 hours a day or have remarkable constitution.

those of us with the problem could very well have issues with immediate gratification. somehow someway we must learn to wait for the rewards that come the setting longterm goals and working to achieve them. yeah i used to work out all the time, was in great shape. maybe i can get that back. been working out to my old exercise videos lately. and i've set a new longterm goal. i see myself as a massage and bodywork therapist. i want to work with ppl and animals. work for myself. it will be difficult as the savings i had are all but depleted from being unemployed for so long, being a freakin gaming addict. good luck to us all

i guess it was the early 80s when i 1st started to become addicted playing elite and repton on the bbc-b. Since then ive spent way to much time playing. i failed my gcse's i somehow scraped into the course i wanted todo at college but then failed and had to resit the 1/2 of the 1st year exams, it was then that it clicked i had a problem so i puled myself away from games for a 3-4 years got my onc/c&g in electronics got a job then once i had cash i relapsed into the games addiction. once i started on mmos i lost 4 years where i remember very little about anything that happened in that time. i remember the birth of my children but their 1st few years of growing up are blank to me, and this is the hardest thing of all for me to come to terms with.

MJ191, I have managed to stop playing video games, but I did not find it easy although I was less addicted than you appear to be (e.g., I only played about 4 hours per day on average and it was just regular video games). Also, I am still struggling with other related problems like procrastination. However, if you would like more details, you can check out my replies and blog entries on this site. Also, I have a fairly detailed progress report at http://www.olganon.org/?q=node/5066 . I also know that there are other addicted gamers (including some who were also quite severely addicted) who have recovered, on this site as well as other related sites (e.g., the ones that I have posted in a reply to your thread "Suggest a Treatment, all help needed.").
