I read in todays paper that a female army medic shielded three soldiers from enemy fire and was awarded the silver star by the vice president the U.S.A.
Where was everyone when uncommon valor was typical in Vietnam? The military used to be stingy with them, What happened? In 1969 I was on my second tour of duty and we were out on patrol. We were attacked heavly so I grabbed the M-6o,planted it and stood my ground until everyone else was aboard the choppers and took off. As a result of that I was captured and help prisoner almost four years. I still never received a dime from the government or a thanks from my comrads. Mine was probably a fairy tale compared to some of the other stories i've heard, we were never rewarded with anything except spit and rotten fruit when we got home. Posted on 05/08/08, 04:05 pm |

Dear Gunny.. Would a medal have made you feel better? My guess is no.. I was one person protesting the war in Vietnam as my husband was serving. i never chucked fruit.. I protested so you could come home.. i am now taking care of a husband dying from agent orange.. Forget whos getting medals. lets worry about who is getting the care they need..

Think blue sun has it right. We certaintly do need to care for our guys who went and fought in hell and still arent getting the care and respect they deserve for themselves or families. It was real, not some movie for crying out loud!! These guys are still suffering and lost. Not carrying lighter backpacks in case it hurts their backs, shorter marches and training as other to hard for them now. Dont we have enough real men left around anymore? Or am I just getting to be in the lucky age group to remember what a real man is like? The one who came home is not the man who went, and got screamed at as baby killers etc and made to feel outcasts for serving their country. Just how many of you men would go now under same conditions, and come home, those of you that may, to same conditions, to the baby you left behind and now a child who has no idea who you are, a wife who struggled to keep faith you would be safe the whole time, sorry, cant see to many stepping up for hell right now. And as we are venting on this, take a tip, try talking to a wife who went through the viet war never knowing from day to day. But do it very gently.

Before I get put in front of a firing squad on here, my comments were not meant for any memeber on this site, but for the average man I pass in the street today who hasnt a clue what it was about. And unfortunatley as long as he is ok, couldnt seem to care less.

I was not a POW guuny like you were so I cannot even say anything about how badly you were treated by the VC and then your government. I just read from Senator McCains military record that he received the Silver Star for refusing to give up information to the enemy WTF. Ninety Nine .nine percent of POW did not give up info to the enemy, so where is your Silver Star, Bronze Star and on and on. I have known other POW's fro Vietnam and their stories where horrible. In accordance with VA regualtions you are entitled to a monthly conpensation for just being a POW.
I agree with you, you deserve the recognition for your status as a POW and your other acts of bravery and you surly have it from me. A fellow Vietnam Vet.

At least theres someone somewhere that remembers us.

Gunny I remember you.. I see you guys everywhere. many are now homeless and waiting in huge lines at the VA hospital. I remember you all. My question is does the goverment who promised to care for you all after you gave your life's? We need to make sure this does not happen to the kids returning home now.. or it will be a nightmare. Not enough hospitals or care available.. That will just push the viet-nam vets down further in line..

your comment is exactly what im trying to say. The Vietnam vets are being pushed aside while all rhese young kids are getting treated/Everyone is pushing the PTSD thing to far. Some women are even claiming PTSD during their periods.
The point I was trying to say was the awards are being given out to often NOW and the people who deserved them in past war are still getting spit at. Think of the awards as VA care. A kid today could get a purole heart for shaving and have VA benefits.
