What do I say to people?

Meat-eaters are always telling me that I'm not getting enough protien. I'm tired of it. I don't know what to say to them other than "yes...actually, I DO!" I hate listing every damn thing I eat when they ask what I eat instead of meat. Is there any way to repspond to this gracefully? I try but discussions about my vegetarianism always seem to be interpreted as a personal attack on the other person when in reality I'm just explaining myself.

" i get this stuff all the time. they are ignorant and don't understand. they rely on their meat for protein. they don't understand protein comes from soy milk, nuts, beans, veggies and so many more places. i just let them know no complaints from the doc. i'm doin fine, thank you. i just can't stand to defend myself. " Personally I stopped trying to explain these things. I got fed up with people always acting like if I don't eat meat I'm going to fall out dead. As long as you know that you're getting what you need, I would try to think of a way to change teh subject and not talk about it. They do tend to take it as a personal attack, and it's not worth the hassle of trying to explain things. Just take a breath and let it go. "

" I just say that millions of vegetarians can't be wrong. There are plenty of cultures where eating meat is taboo and they would be the ones told how wrong what they're doing was. "

" I don't understand why people concern themselves so much with my eating habits. I tell everyone that it's my body and I decide what goes in it. "

" OMG I hate this question! When someone asks this I can't help but think my head "you're an idiot". I don't ask people who eat processed foods where they get their nutrients!!! I sometimes try to explain that the largest animals are vegetarians (elephants, giraffes). I like the one about some cultures not eating meat. But I wish I had some snappy comeback intsead. "

" I take it as a personal attack when they ask me anything about my diet. First of all you can tell by their tone and their eyes most of them don't really care and just want to make themselves feel better about eating meat. Second of all it's a very personal issue - I don't get in anyone's face about their diet. Third just saying you're a vegatarian automatically offends them, so it's already too late. Might as well tell them what you know and not worry about it. If you don't want to hear it don't ask! "
