Aldara Cream

Hi everyone. I wanted to add this story here and see if anyone else has had a reaction to aldara cream.. I hope my story helps others, and when something like this happens, even if there is a one percent chance that it could happen, I think patients should be informed. I was not.

I was told I had HPV and Grade I vaginal cancer cells. I was shocked. Here I was 51 and I always had good paps. I also did not have any warts, just the virus. Anyway....after being shocked my doctor said that the aldara cream, used for the warts was being used to get rid of the cancer cells. I was to have it put in the tip of the vagina, 3 times, a week apart, in the doctor's office. She gave me my first treatment that day.(I have no cervic, due to hysterectomy)

The very next day my back was very achy. I thought nothing of it because I have osteroarthritis, and 2 herniated discs. Fast forward. Eighteen hours later, the pain was so bad, in my back, buttocks and legs that I could not walk. I also was running a fevor.

The ambulance came and at the hospital they did not know what was going on with me. Morphine did not even touch the pain. I was crying like a little child. I thought, my God just take me now, as I have never, EVER experienced pain like that. Finally the dilaudid took ahold after about 15 minutes.
It was horrible.

I later read that less than 1% of people will have this reaction to the cream, but it does happen. The label on this med says not to use inter-vaginally???? My doctor's office does, and says they have never had this reaction but needless to say she did not have me back for the other 2 treatments.

If my next pap is bad, I don't have any idea what treatment will be? I was TOO upset to even ask. I really like my doctor. She has the BEST reputation around here, and I believe because of the success with this cream and the cancer cells, they feel it is worth the risk? Although I wanted to STRANGLE her, while I was suffering so badly...

Has anyone here had any experience with aldara cream for vaginal cancer cells? Does anyone know if this cream did not wipe out the cells, what she will do next? I know I have to ask her, but I really have just been too upset.

Thank you everyone! I appreciate you listening to my experience.

" I forgot to add that for 2 full months following the vaginal tissue just burned. I was using lidocaine gel like crazy at the opening. Also, when the initial reaction occured my vagina blistered from the cream..

Things are much better now. I still have a slight burning, but I am dealing...
Thanks.. "

" That sounds so horrible! Although I did not have that cream, I have had bad pain, but the morphine did help for the surgical pain. The other pain I had that was beyond comprehension is right before surgery they injected a radioactive just into the skin around where I had the first glad removed and I was screaming and they had to hold me down on the table. It was brief, however, just a few minutes. I'm so sorry you had to feel that for so long. It makes me cry to think about it. Big Hugs for you! "

" Thanks Debbie. I have a new doctor and a lawyer now. I still have the burning vaginal tissue. It just never corrected itself after that incident with the aldara. I am so worried and scared, and I know that the vaginal cancer cells need to be dealt with soon. My appt. with my new doctor is Dec. 12th. I will let you all know what happens. I am SO discouraged about this. AT the VERY least the doctor that used the aldara cream should of told me what it was and the potential side effects. I have sinced researched this drug, and she made ONE huge mistake with me.

I appreciate the support here:)
