Urge incontinence (also known as overactive bladder) affects millions worldwide
1) It is the involuntary loss of urine accompanied by or immediately preceded by a sensation of urgency 2) The cause is believed to be increased excitability of detrusor smooth muscle in the bladder 3) Medical therapy remains the standard treatment of urge incontinence (Detrol, Ditropan, Vesicare, etc) and the long acting formulations of Ditropan and Detrol (Detrol LA, Ditropan LA) tend to have a better side effect profile than the immediate release 4) IN ADDITION to meds there are nonsurgical options: behavioral modification, pelvic floor muscle training and biofeedback that have proven benefit 5) Botulinum A toxin is gaining popularity in the management of urge incontinence...and is injected intravesically (in the bladder) into the detrusor muscle Dr O.
