So I need go on an venting rampage for a little bit....

My sister, who is younger (I'm the oldest of 4), is throwing me my baby shower next Saturday along with my cousin. She has been sick for the last 3+ weeks. I told her to go to the doctor a couple weeks ago when she was needing to stay home from work, but then she said she started feeling better. Well, she now has a real nice cough that she can't get rid of. I talked to her today and asked her is she was going to go to the doctor. She said she talked to her friend, who is doing her residency or rounds at a hospital in North Carolina, and she said that it sounds like she had upper bronchitis and now she has lower bronchitis. She told her that antibiotics really don't do anything for it but make you feel better until it clears up (Keep in mind this is what she is telling me her friend told her). Now, I get bronchitis alot and am very susceptable to it. I've had it so many times that it actually caused me to get full blown asthma and I was hospitalized just before I got pregnant because it went into pneumonia with complications of asthma! Because of how easily I get it, I don't want her to come to my shower unless she goes to the doctor and 1, gets checked out and 2, is on antibiotics for 48 hours if her doctor decides she needs them. She needs to at least have someone listen to her chest to make a diagnosis! Is that wrong of me? I cannot risk getting sick, especially this close to the end of my pregnancy. I have been lucky to not hear that nasty "B" word (bedrest) so far, and my OB is very happy with how my pregnancy has gone with the twins so far. I can't risk getting my blood pressure up (it always goes up when I get chest infections) or worse. What would you do? I'm going to have my mom talk to her to see if she can get her to go to the doctor and let her know that she can't be around me if she is sick.

OH! and she also informed me the other day that she has 3 showers the weekend of my shower, one the same day. All I have to say is she better not be planning on leaving mine to go to the other one, especially since she is hosting it! It's at my house, so she better not expect everyone else to clean up afterwards so she can leave to go to her friend's baby shower!

So am I over reacting? What would you do? Any suggestions in my hormonal state would be greatly appreciated. DH said if I don't want to tell her she is not coming up here unless she goes to the doctor, then he will and he wants her to bring a doctor's note. I don't think she needs to go to that extreme, but knowing her, she would tell me she went, and not really go.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Erin

" I can't blame you in anyway. Is there anyway you can change the date until she feels better to host a baby shower and have only yours to go to.You and the others can;t afford to get sick right now and she should know that.Good Luck. "

" It is not until the 15th, so she should have plenty of time to go to the doctor. "

" I'd still reschedule my own. First of all, she is planning on somebody else cleaning up unless your party is the last one. 2nd, how much planning has the hostess been able to do since she has been sick for a month for one shower, much less 3? I don't know if she is involved in planning the others but I were you I would find the other mothers having showers and all 3 of you put up a united front. None of you can afford to get sick because her friend hasn't gotten her MD yet. In either case, she wouldn't come near me with a ten foot pole. Peace "

" I don't think you are over reacting. I am a nrse and you can't diagnose bronchitis over the phone. And if she has had the cough for a while she really needs to get it checked out for her own good. "

" UPDATE: My mom has talked to my sister and she is going to call the doctor to see what they say. Also, I don't know if she is intending on going to the other shower that day. Mom said they have it handled and not to worry. I trust my mom, so I am going to try to just relax and let mom handle it all. Thanks for all of your imput! I really appreciate it! "
