Pumping breastmilk

I tried to pump breastmilk yesterday for the first time and it took over an hour for me to pump 4 oz. I also noticed that my right breast was pumping literally twice the amount of milk as my left breast. Is this normal or is there cause for concern?

It depends on how long it had been since you fed the babies last. Your body needs time inbetween to fill back up. You need to be drinking alot!! And what side did you feed on last because that one will have less in it so it won't pump as much as fast. It will get easier just make sure the pump has a really good seal around your nipple and sometimes if you make a fist and press down on your breast while pumping it makes it come out faster. Good luck

First of all, I wouldn't pump for more than 15-20 minutes because you can cause trauma to the tissue. Women generally pump 1/2 to 2 oz per side per pumping, lessif after nursing. more if it's been a while. What kind of pump do you have? That can make a big difference. When I first started pumping I always got 2-3 times more form my left side, 9 months later we're about even!

Hi there...I used to pump and nurse and I would only pump for about 15-20 minutes...Suzy is right (as usual!!!) its just taxing to pump for so long...your breasts will produce what is needed in a quantity that they are "able" to produce. I was surprised after 6 weeks of no milk at all the progression or production to over 7 ozs per breast by the time they were a year old...and they could suck me dry in 5 minutes...so your doing VERY well...Keep it up! I so miss it.

I pumped for 4 months and fed my twins the milk. I would only pump for about 20 minutes and do both sides at once. I used a WIC issued pump, they have hospital grade pumps, if you have any question about the one you have now, you might consider checking in with your local WIC agency, they may have one that you can borrow, especially if you have twins.

i too was concerned about one of my breasts producing more milk than the other. my right is always an ounce to 2 oz less than my left each pumping time. i asked both my ob and my kids' pediatrician, they both said it was completely normal, just like every woman has 2 different sized boobs... made me feel better to know that it was okay.
