Nightime feedings

I have a set of week and a half old twin girls and I am getting mixed info about how to handle night feedings from various lactation specialists. One specialist says to wake them every 3-4 hours if they do not wake on their own and one specialist says to let them sleep as long as they can. Last night they slept for 5 solid hours before waking up to feed and then only fed for 20 minutes. Is this normal for twins so young? Am I ok to let them sleep or should I be waking them?

" I think 5 hours is ok unless they are underweight. We had to wake our girls every 3 hours because they were preemies. What does your doctor say? 20 minutes is a good feeding time. As my girls got older and better at nursing we're down to about 10 minute feeds. "

" My twins were premies (born at 34 weeks) and we were told to wake them every 3 hours at night. I would go by whatever their doctor says. "

" if they are gaining, not jaundice and wanting to sleep 5 hours, then let them! i think 20 mintues at night is good. night feedings aren't always long anyways.
we woke ours up for the first few weeks, but after they were both gaining and sleeping good, we let them just sleep. i think that was around a month or so (might have been later).
i would talk to your pediatrician. i don't know what credentials lactation consultants have, but a doctor would know best. we had 2 different lactation consultants with our twins, and one was a complete wingnut.
we eventually just let them sleep as long as they wanted and just got up with whoever woke. our little girl sleeps right thru (10-12 hours) and our little boy will still only do about 8 hours at a time.
definetely be sure to check their weights frequently (1-2 weeks until you are sure they are gaining sufficiently).
and give yourself a pat on the back for breastfeeding twins! "

" how active are they during the day..i know they are only little but if they are nappers during the day then they may need a big sleep at night! lily used to wake every two hours while tom was every 5 hours..they are individuals too so just go with what they are doing hun...as everyone says if they are eating well and gaining weight its obviously means they are two contented lil bubs!
