Hello all, I am a beginning teacher at a middle school, and am particularly concerned about one of my favorite students. His younger brother was recently diagnosed with TB on top of being evicted from their home. This 13 year old student of mine is having a particularly difficult time coping with these stresses. Because I am so concerned about him, I was hoping any of you might be willing and/or able to give some advice about how to cope, advice, and provide support for him and his family. Hi, I'm in school and telling my friends was really difficult. My parents yelled at me for not getting rid of it without drugs which is impossible. Let him know that he should get tested and even if it comes back positive he may not be actively sick, that it's not his fault and that other than taking his meds there's nothing more that he can do. Be theree for him, it's scary to be diagnosed even with inactive like me. I cried a good 5 times, and several since then over my family and friends reactions. Let him know that you're there if this happens to him.

It would be good if you could ensure he continues taking medication for as long as needed. With tuberculosis, patients tend to feel better after two weeks but may need to continue meds for up to a year. Stopping meds can lead to MDR drug resistant tb which in some cases is incurable.
