The TN pain I'm getting is the shock-like electracutions on the right side of my face near my cheek and it's always in the same spot triggered by eating, brushing teeth, washing mouth, talking or for no reason at all. The intensity of the pain and its frequency vary, basically no rhyme or reason. But Tegretol has been effective in controlling it.
I've been seeing a Facial Pain Specialist, who is also a dentist. My Neurologist referred me to him for an evaluation. One of the meds he gave me for short term pain relief was lidocaine. Lidocaine is what dentist's use to numb your gums when they work on your teeth. So he prescribed a tube of Lidocaine and what I do is before a meal I just put a dab on my finger and rub it onto my gum near the area where I have the pain (the 2nd branch of the trigeminal nerve) and it numbs me for 10 - 20 minutes so at least I can eat pain free. Obviously, putting it on all day would not be ideal, but at least during bad episodes of pain or before a meal can give relief. It may be something you want to consider. I have used lidocaine as well for short term relief, but I have it in the form of a suspension delivered as a nose spray. It was made for me by a pharmacist as prescribed by a FNP.
