Going to operate

Hi all
Well, after some going between dentist, doctor, neurologist, the Neurosurgeon has now agreed that the best possible treatment for me is microvascular decompression. I am absolutely petrified - for lots of reasons really. What if the diagnosis is wrong and I have the operation for nothing. What if the operation is unsuccessful and the pain does not go away? What if something goes wrong? My head is all over the place. More than anything I am worried that I have been mis-diagnosed and do not really have TN. My symptoms do not really match those of TN. I am still suffering with a lot of pain in my teeth and have insisted I see a Maxillofacial Consultant again before I have the operation. I have read that TN can be caused by some kind of cavitation in the jaw bone. What if this is whats wrong with me. I understand that if I did have this then I could have the operation but the pain would not go away. I have been to the dentist at least once a month for the last 14 months and have seen a Maxillo guy before. Is it realistic to think that the problem is still dental and it has now been found. I feel like I am going mad with all of this. If I could just be sure that it was 100% TN then I know that having an operation would be the right thing to do. However, because no one can say for sure that I have TN then I have so many doubts. Any advice anyone? Lisa Posted on 06/18/08, 11:06 am |

I don't really have any advise for you, but I do have sympathy. I hate the thought of surgery too and I've had many dental episodes, but the pain keeps coming back.
Good luck, Pat

i too have been considering MVD for some time now, mostly scared of the big nature of the surgery. however, unlike you, i am sure I have TN. i have visited dentists and i am confident all dental issues have been ruled out. i have also read a ton about TN and my symtoms and triggers match TN exactly. do yours? the only downfall is that my MRI does not show a clear vein or artery impinging on the nerve, but this is common as well. i say all this in an effort to help you make a decision. surgery is a scary thing but in my opinion its worth it for the chance to relieve the pain. the main thing you need to do, though, it be sure you have TN. definitely go to all the dentists and specialists you want in order to feel confident that this is your condition. it would be a shame to have surgery for the wrong condition. but it wouldn't be a shame to try it for the chance of success assuming you are diagnosed correctly.
