Background:
Woke up in Oct 07 with swollen cheek, as day progressed a rash appeared along with a lot of pain, and paralysis of my cheek. Only one side. Severe headaches. Went to the ER they said it was an infection gave me antibiotics. Swelling and redness went away eventually -few days, but pain and stiffness remained. That lasted about two weeks, of sharp pains, as well as inability to move half my face. After that my movement returned to normal but still had attacks of pain. Feb 08 paralysis returned, only slight swelling around where my nose meets my cheek. no rash. but severe headaches once again. went back to the ER because I could barely function. This time they diagnosed it as TN. Gave me Neurontin, and referral to a neurologist. Went and saw him, he wasn't sure it was TN. I had an MRI , CT and some type of stimulation test and blood work . all negative. So he decided it was TN, and put me on low dose of Elavil instead. Sporadic pain has continued, didn't have another bad attack until last Wednesday. My face swelled, rash, headache, paralysis of cheek. It makes me unable to make facial expressions and talk correctly. By today its almost entirely gone other than asymmetry of my mouth, because the muscles still aren't moving right. My question is I know from reading other topics some of you have presented with swelling, but what about a rash or facial paralysis? I spoke with someone from TNA, and she said sometimes her face doesn't move. But at this point I am not convinced I have TN. Any help or similar experiences? Posted on 06/09/08, 08:06 pm |

No swelling, rash or paralysis for me- just shots of pain around my right eye.
Keep researching- I know how frustrating this is. I was misdiagnosed for a long time- with sinus stuff before they got mine right! good luck- keep me posted Jill

I have had redness and swelling in the past and had dentist evaluate and do teeth work. I still have pain in the same place now but not as much swelling and redness. Maybe there is some dental involvement at times, as it is the same nerve involved when it is teeth involvement or pain without infection of teeth or sinuses. ...seems so hard to tease out the cause...

I do swell during an attack, never any redness or a rash though.

What you are describing is damage to the autonomic nerves, you may be interested in joining the neuropathy group. Look for the topics that have "autonomic" in the subject line.
