Does a Shot of Liquor Help You?

Hi, am I weird?

I have pretty good relief with the Gabapentin that I take and the Topiramate. But sometimes I get nerve pain, not just in the trigeminal nerve, but also from my neuropathy in my feet and some in my hands.

But before I go into anything "hard" like Tylenol 3 I will take a generic "Tylenol Ultra" and see how that helps. If it helps a little but not enough, then I will take a shot of hard liquor. A measured shot, and straight. I don't want anything too hard on my blood sugar level.

Anyway I find that it does really help with that electrical shooting tree or slicing type nerve pain.

I do worry about becoming dependant on taking a shot now and again. It could lead down a road I would not want to follow considering I really am not a "drinker". I really do not even drink socially. Most parties and such I do not drink. Only at something formal where there is wine with a meal for instance, or at something like a birthday party where they are offering a toast with single malt scotch.

Anyway. Are there others who get relief from even a single shot for a 3 to 6 hour time period?

" That made me hurt just reading it. Liquor seems to set of the fire and electrical sensations in my face then comes the crawling pain and twitches. We have counted over 27 different sensations and facial changes from my neuralgia in the face.
I would love a good shot of tequila but those days are over for me. I use to take a shot before bed when I was younger at like 23 it did help numb the pain but not now. "

" If I drink it helps significantly at the time but I pay for it later. I will feel better after a shot but once it wears off it seems it seems like I have more pain then I started off with. Its my personal oppinion that whatever works stick to. I'm not telling you to become an alcoholic by any means but if a shot helps you out I say do it. I would. "

" Today was a really bad day for me and after taking everything i had to help and had hot showers etc. i just resorted to a small glass of wine and it helped.. I don't advocate alcolism either. But i say if it works then use it. I only use it as a last resort. And it helps me sleep too. But i only have one glass. "

" Darrell,
I have MS and any alcohol seems to intensify the symptoms. I read these others and am jealous that they can have a cocktail. Few things are more enjoyable to me than a drink of a good single malt scotch from time to time. Alas, it is not to be for me. It would be insulting if it helped my TN being unable to have a drink due to MS.
And, by the way Darrell... Yes, you are weird. We are all weird. We have a disease where we must convince those pertinent that we really do have major pain. Actually, it’s our situation that is weird.
Take Care

" My Tn is caused by extra blood vessels in my brain so any alcohol makes the pain worse because of it's effect on the vessels.
It may be why many here also have the experience of the worsening.
I would consider what else you may be doing at the same time that may be helping, not being anywhere where the pain may be triggered, feeling drowsy so you would not notice it, or notice it as much, etc.
Also, my lightening type pains were very short limited. Anything I tried to do for them essentially had a coincidental benefit as the pain stopped on its own,
I know, for me, that sometimes when I think it is A that is helping it actually turns out to be B or C.
It sounds like you might also have diabetes (?) becuse of the neuropathy and your concern about your sugar level.
Have you talked with your doc about any problems using the liquor may cause you now or down the road?
I hope this is of some help.

" Yea, I agree with Mikeh, we can all be weird together - ha !!!
I noticed on your profile that you had GERD. I would think the alchohol might be bad for your tummy. When we are in terrible pain and need SOMETHING - I think are a lot worse things than a shot of glenlivet, but I hope you eventually get a doctor to help out with some medicine that might have fewer side effects for you.
blessings,
Pat "

" You know I thought of taking a drink but I hate any form of alcohol. And I was concern what it might do. I even thought of smoking pot as I heard it takes pain away. But I really do not want to be in the clouds I need to be down to earth. I have a husband and children and gran childen. Imagine they se me smoked up all day or smelling of alcohol.
So my advice is stay away, Keep trying something new.One of us will find something that will work. Lots of hugs. "

" I rarely drank before this; maybe 4 to 6 times year. However, when nothing would help I started drinking. Drinking didn't help but It would make me sleep. However my Doctor began acting like my drinking was the problem and not the TN. I stopped drinking, it wasn't helping anyway and I didn't like the taste. I have but one addiction ...chocolate. "

" That is so funny. I thought I was the only one with that type of relief remedy. Actually I carry those small travel bottles of tequila with me everywhere. I am in remission now but when I am flaring I just quit any other social drinking and save it for the "pain shots" so to speak! I guess I would rather do a shot of booze than suffer in pain. "

" Well, Just had a crazy event trying to take Tegretol. Doctors dosed me up to 2200 milligrams a day and my white blood platelets dropped to 12! I was a ZOMBIE!!! I swear my idiot Doctors were trying to kill me! I really was on the edge of death.

Now I am almost completely weaned off of the Tegretol (200mg a day). I live in california and have a legal "MediCann" card. I am under the care of a real MD and have a prescribed amount to smoke each day. Smoking 2-3 good puffs 3 times a day makes me feel a lot better. It gives me energy and it makes the pain go away. Somehow it makes your brain defocus on the pain.

I am finding a link between hydration and my classic trigeminal neuralgia. I also get heart palipitations when I am dehydrated.
I have been drinking lots of water and my TN hasn't been bad. Has anyone else found this to be so?

I have been on a liquid diet for a couple of months because it hurts so horribly to eat. I have heard a connection about lowfat diet and TN.

All I have is darvocet & ice. I ice my trigeminal nerve & face a couple times a day. I can't drink but I am sure it would make me sicker than a dog! "
