Help for TN

Oh my, I am in shock. I just found this site. I am newly diagnosed and in disbelief. Is this for real? I keep thinking that my Drs have made a mistake and I have some kind of "tumor" or something that they have missed. This can't be for real! How do you tell people about this? I had an allergic reaction to the Tegretol (which worked so well RIGHT AWAY) so now on Gabapentin. Not working all the time. So my question, and please don't think I am crazy because I already think that, is has anyone out there found any relief in a shot of alcohol? Don't laugh. I know that sounds bad but when I am having a bad attack I can make it subside by using a shot a tequila. It's been amazing for me but I don't like to do it unless its really really bad. I am so glad I found this site. I feel very alone and very confused. I have so many questions. Thank you so much.

" Yes, before I got my dx (and my tegretol) the only way I could eat anything for dinner, after not eating all day, was too have a few glasses of wine.

Makes sense, I guess, because alcohol is a Central Nervous System depressant. Just not a great long term solution though... "

" dlee- so the tegretol is completly controlling the pain for you? Do you ever have one "break through"? I can't take tegretol so taking gabapentin. It really helps but I still have break through episodes off and on. "

" I take the Gabapentin at high doses but it does a good job of controlling my TN most of the time. I don't take anything for breakthrough for that. But I do take Percocet 3 times a day for knee and abdominal pain. That must help some for this pain also. "

" Tegretol did take care of the pain completely, but made me pretty loopy, so I take Gabapentin now too.

I had to increase my dosage from 900 mg/day to 3000 mg/day. Still have breakthrough pain, but manageable for the most part. I am finding that this is making me tired which is annoying, but preferable to the pain.

Does anyone else notice that the pain gets worse if you're angry, upset, nervous? It's bizarre, but I definately notice a correlation. "

" Yes, definitely found my pain increases when I get stressed or anxious. I don't know why this. It also gets worse as the day goes on. The morning starts ok, then by lunch I can feel it starting, then I have a really dopey period due to the drugs, and then by early evening it seems to hit its peak. I am lucky in that I never have it during the night. Apparently this is due to the fact I have type 2 TN.

Best wishes, Lisa "
