Been to see Neurologist

Well, been to see the Neurologist who confirmed that it is TN. He wants to do a CT scan and is arranging an appointment for me to see the Neurosurgeon as he is keen to carry out a procedure rather than continue with the meds. As he accepts that I am not coping with the meds and have 2 small children to look after. I had been taking Tegretol 100 mg 3 times a day, together with Tramadol. He has however changed this to Tegretol Retard 300 mg twice a day in the hope that this can reduce some of the side effects. However 3 days down the line the meds are not working as well.

I keep thinking what if they have got it wrong and when they carry out the surgical procedure they will find nothing wrong.

Does anyone else experience a numbing kind of pressing pain down the side of their head. Probably not described that too well!!! It starts by the side of the eye and runs down to the ear. Is this a symptom of TN or a side effect of the Tegretol.

Just feel all over the place at the moment but am glad that I now have some kind of action plan.

Best wishes
Lisa

" Medication is working for me. I'm on Tegretol XR, but on a high dose of 800mg 3 times a day. We may reduce this and add in a second med such as Neurontin because I have some double vision. Other than this I have no side affects.

I'd work the medication route a little more before taking the surgery. From what I've read it's still a little early for that.

Check out the Wikipeia web site:

and the Trigeminal Neuralgia Assoc site:

Presently I'd be okay with taking young children into my care, and will be good to drive again once the vision is cleared up.

Please try to not worry too much. I was scared most of the time until the pain was brought into control. And take heart in there being several likely solutions for this.

Take care, and I'll keep you in my thoughts,
Mike "
