TN and or TMJ???

I am really getting confused with all my crazy symptoms. today I am really feeling like I have a mad case of TMJ. Both sides- Jaws and muscles in both cheek areas are killing me. I guess you could call it a dull ache- but it can be more than that at times. My temple areas KILLS when I touch it (both sides)- feels really bruised or something.
Do you think these 2 conditions can co-exist? Or could this actually be TN symptoms. My typical TN symptoms are different- shots or twinges of pain around my right eye when I touch my lips. That is not my issue today. Today its totally jaw/cheek related (both sides) I don't see my neurologist for 2 weeks. I just went to the TMJ support community and read everything. I don't know-
Its not really clear cut. But one thing is for sure it annoying and it hurts. I took a handful of Ibuprofen - didn't work:( Does anyone else here have TMJ? Or any advice for me? I had an MRI last week but have not gone over the results yet with Neurologist. I do know that there is no tumor and no MS.- so that has been ruled out.
Thanks for any help:)
Jill

" Hi Jill

Most of my TN is based around my teeth and jaws. I find that if I have a day when there is no pain in my teeth then it is my jaws that ache. Just like you. I wonder if it is down to tensing up when the symptoms of TN are bad.

What is the difference between TMJ and TN any way. Being new to all of this I am feeling quite naive!

" interesting! Do you have a problem on both sides? Lately I am- both jaw joints, upper cheeks...ugh! I am looking into if I might have both TMJ and TN at the same time (or possibly something called Temporal Tendenitis?). I am really confused. I am taking insaine amounts of advil, I honestly don't know if its helping or not. Today my face is not so bad. I am going to call my dentist- it may be useless, but I don't see the neurologist for another 2 weeks!
hang in-
Thanks for any help!

" Jill

Yes mine is both sides. The TN is on my left but when the jaws and cheeks throb it is always both sides.

Another trip to the Dentist. Why do we do this. Do you think we are just hanging on to a hope that it may just be toothache. I dread to think how many times I have been to my Dentist since this all started last April. I know I have been 4 times in the last month!!

Good luck.

" Hi, I do suspect I have both and they both affect the other. I also have serious sinus problems, another contributer to TN. Also I have very poor circulation. I think all of these things are related in me. Even a month with too much hormonal activity (a bad period) can set off the sinus pain and the related TN and then a tumult into TMJ. I am looking forward to menopause.

I have TN in my jaws, mostly. It's both sides. It feels like they are being pressed in a vice. It's worse at night.

Ibuprofen does nothing for me. I've tried numerous pain pills, even the ones for bovines, and they did not help.

I hope it lets up for you!

" I am new to the TN world, but I can tell you what happened to me and maybe it will help. I was diagnosed with temporal tendonitis, TMJ and atypical facial pain. I believe I have a muscular problem in my face and I clench my teeth at night, causing the tendonitis. They got that part correct. If you believe in muscular TMJ vs. something wrong with the joint itself, then ok, I have too. But the muscles can cause all sorts of dull achy pains. It's really weird.

Until I woke up one day and couldn't brush my teeth, couldn't wash my face or blow dry my hair and had STABBING pain in my face, I was not diagnosed with TN and put on medication for it. It is only on ONE side. So do I still use my splints for TMJ, yeah, I'm more comfortable with them in than without. Do I let them work on my mouth anymore...heck no. I hope that helps.

P.S. I am very knowledgable about TMJ, not so much about TN yet. So if I can help with something I do know about, just ask.

Hugs, Tig "

" You Can get TN on Both sides at one time...is rare, but does happen...

Mine Usually hits right side, and in the jaw line...Occaisionally I get it above the brow, but rarely at the same time as below the eye, which is why they Misdiagnosed me at first, I had to bring the Dr. literature on TN...Awwww, Imagine that...so he sent me up for an MRI... Chewy foods seems to be my trigger....no more milk duds for me !! "

" I have been diagnosed with both TMJD and TN. The neurologist said my TN is reflex sympathetic dystrophy. The TMJ is severe arthritis in the joint, plus lots of scar tissue, and muscle problems. The TN and TMJ pains are very different for me. The TN is a sharp stabbing pain -- it feels like millions of needles are stabbing me across the cheek bone and across my eye brow. The TMJD pain is more dull. Often it feels like someone has shoved a very thick very dull butter knife into the joint itself. The pain also spreads to include my whole head and can be so bad it forces me to stay home and it will spread down my neck and shoulder. So, I would say that TN and TNJ definitely can occur at the same time. The only thing I've found for the TMJ pain is vicodin, but that doesn't help with the nerve pain. I've been on neurontin for over a year and that helps a lot with the TN pain, but I still have breakthrough pain sometimes.

I hope the pain subsides for you. Hang in there and keep us posted. "

" I have both TN and TMJ. I wear a mouth piece to keep my TMJ in check, but I do sometimes feel like it makes my TN worse. You might want to see a dentist to see if you have TMJ. Both of these disorders are very painful so I wish you the best of luck! "

" Often too the pain or fear of the TN pain causes such stress/fear that you clench your jaws and that can cause some of the pain/discomfort you are describing.I know for me my jaws can be tender to the touch because of the strain I put on them with the clenching. (Also grinding your teeth at night -that can alsdo cause that pain in your cheeks and jaws.)

I am not a medical person but because TMJ and TN are very different disorders, I would think they can both be happening. "
