Coming to terms with TN

Has anyone else struggled to come to terms with being diagnosed with TN. I am finding it really hard. I just cannot believe all the pain is being caused by something which cannot be seen. On a bad day I just convince myself there must be something wrong with my teeth and the Dentist has missed something.

Just been put back on Carbamazepine, despite the bad side effects, as this is the only thing that offers some relief. Not so at the moment though!!!

Does anyone else get a strange taste in their mouth?

Is anyone else's pain continual rather than intermittent as stated in text book cases.

Some days I have just had enough and want to take the whole packet of pain killers. No wonder it is called the suicide disease.

Feeling rather sorry for myself at the moment.

Hoping everyone is coping OK.

Best wishes.
Lisa

" Has anyone been on tegretol and had it take a while to work? i've been on it for about 2 weeks..
I have ATN so the pain is constant and only at night, and ever since taking tegretol.. the pain has been less severe but i still get the same number of attacks, basically one every night. There have been a few attacks that have been pretty painful but i am hoping that the decrease in pain is a sign that the tegretol is working!! Also can anyone suggest something that will help the pain when im having an attack? Something that i can mention to my doctor. I was taking sumatriptan, a migrain pill which obvisouly didnt work and it was 50$ for 4 pills. Im afraid i will have to resort to morphine. any sugguestions would be lovley! "

" Langhyde,
I've been on tegretol for so long that I don't remember how quickly it did or didn't take to work. I do know it's been a godsend for me. As for the pain when I have what I call a breakthrough attack. You know the kind, when your face swells and it hurts to move your eyeballs or tongue or to swallow, that's when I take hydrocodone with ibuprophen in it. It does help. It doesn't stop the attack, but either makes it bearable or lets me knock myself out.
Hope this helps!
Love, Peace and Hugs "

" Unfortunately, that's very true DakotaRose. I have an extremely high pain tolerance and this can completely incapacitate me.
The way I first understood this, the nerve was sending FALSE signals of pain to my brain. I sure do wish my brain were not so damn gullible! It even responds by physical manifestations such as swelling.
Just another one of my body's cruel jokes? "
