I remember reading an older thread about this, but I couldn't find it...anyway, I've found that I usually only pull with my left hand. I'm right handed, this is the only thing I do exclusively with my left hand.

That's true,I dO the same,I'm right handed and I pull my hairs whth the left.I did't notice that.But it's true.

I would say that you have more conscious control over your dominant hand the other hand more in command of the unconscious. That's why it is sometimes worth going ahead and asking the unconscious why it does it using internal dialogue. If you are prepared for the answers it gives you, then it can go along way to helping you find something better do. It most probably wont come out and tell you just like that but it will give you a sign of some kind be it physical,aural or visual. One of the best ways do deal with the response is to treat any information you can get as advice from a friend, then ask that 'friend' if there would be any other behaviour that would satisfy the need to pull that didn't involve pulling. All you have to do is to Listen to the suggestions and try them out.
