Okay, My name is Amanda
And i have trichotillomania. and also may have OCD. I have trich for about a year and a half now. I told my mom when i found out.. but she just thought i was overreacting. and that i can just stop anytime. that made it worse, because i knew i COULDNT stop by myslelf, and she didnt believe me. We never really talked about it since then. She used to occasionally ask me if i had stopped, and i say kinda. But i know thats a lie. now we never talk about it. I think that she has forgotten, or thought i had stopped already. I also may have OCD because i seem to do things others dont. Every night, I have to do things in a certain order, and everything has to be in its place. Also, i have so many things that scare me, that just run around in my head. For a long time now, i have been saying these prayers or just talking to God in my head. At first, It was just at night. Now i do it about fifty times a day. More or less. And i say certain things and if i miss something i have to go back through it all and often repeat things ten times or more. This whole week i have been trying to build up the courage to go to the school counselor. I havent gotten to it yet.. Im just so scared. And i have no idea what i would say to her, to make her understand what im going through. Sorry, this thing is so long. I just thought it would be helpful to get to know why im here. Hey girl, we're glad you're here. We are all here to help each other. I understand how scary and weird it can be to go to your school counselor...I am a senior in college, and I went for the first time last year. I was so freaked out, that the first time I went I was filling out paperwork and just got up and left...then I went back and had an "intake session" which is where they just figure out what you need help with by asking you questions. Guess what? One of the questions on the survey is "do you ever pull your hair?" I told them about my trich before they could even get to it though. So don't be scared. They aren't there to judge you. And yeah, it's hella scary to tell some stranger about all your problems, but sometimes it can be really nice to have someone to talk to who isn't going to judge you and can even offer some advice that might actually be helpful. I hope you go, but even if you don't I am definitely glad you joined us.

First Amanda, welcome to the group! Nice to meet ya'!
Second, it sounds like you could have OCD as well....however OCD can be managed (read my post on the brain) and the good news is: I've worked with a lot of OCD people and they are so organized and such good workers because they can get themselves into a routine that works! and they are usually very high energy......so this is not toally a negative thing! Re your mom.....we've all had to educate the people we love. They don't understand why we can't stop...and it's hard for us to explain as well. There is a post on trich facts you could print and show her...trich is an impulse control disorder, meaning that we want to stop but having trouble stopping. I'm sure she is frustrated simply because she wants you to be 'whole' and without this problem. I get that from my husband too.....it's just 'cause they love us. The good thing about counselors is that they are required to keep your secret!! Have a great day and let us know how your appt. goes.
