So I went to my cousin’s store today to buy a jacket (my cousin owns a clothing boutique) and she pointed out that my hair is gross and badly needs it be cut. The last time I got a haircut was 3 years ago, and the woman who cut it spent the entire time asking me why I would want to pull my hair out. So it turns out that my cousin’s best friend is a hairdresser down the street, and before I could stop her, my cousin called her friends and asked if she could squeeze me in. I made up like 10 excuses, but none of them were really believable or legitimate, so the hairdresser cleared up some time for me. What do I do? I’m freaking out. Not only do I have to face another hairdresser, but this person will tell me cousin who will tell her mother and just like that my entire extended family will know. This is going to be humiliating. I can’t sleep. I don’t know what to do.

Call and cancel the appointment!
Then find another hairdresser who is more 'obscure' and get your hair cut there so there is no followup appointment made for you. Then if that hairdresser is cool, you can go back...if not, you can keep looking. Another idea is to make your appointment at a 'slow' time of the day so there are less questions from other customers. You could also call and chat with the hairdresser beforehand and tell her you have trich and need a haircut and does she think she can do it without embarassing you???

i wish to goodness sakes that they would touch on that in cosmetology school...it IS a condition of the hair, which they are studying. it is sad that none of them know anything about it..i agree with knitting...you should call someone who works in a "smaller shop", explain your condition annonymously and see what their reaction is. if they are not professional, move on to the next name in the phone book. if you can explain what is going on before you get there, they will be prepared for what they see and wont embarrass you by asking questions with a loud voice, or calling someone over to have a look and give their opinion. i have known a few people who have a hairdresser that they trust and the person makes no notice of the fact that they have bald spots all over their head. just a haircut with out all the questions...hehe. cancel the appointment and make some phone calls...i know you will be able to find someone.

Dear danib55, you can deal with this directly, call the hairdresser, be honest and tell her you have had bad experience. Tell her you would like some confidentality, if she agrees good. If she doesnt then you can cancel. You would be surprised how often people can be understanding. If you cancel, without talking to her, you will have to come up with reason or excuse why u can not keep appt. Dont let the trich rule you, u can rule it.

So I ended up going to the hairdresser because I never actually knew her name or where she worked (so I couldn't call or cancel) and as it turns out, her best friend has trich too. She was completely understanding and discreet about it and when she finished she put it up nicely for me. I guess even though I've never met anyone personally that I knew had trich, there are a lot of us out there and it's more common than it seems. I feel a lot better. Thanks for the advice guys

As hard as it is, I wouldn't be afraid to try the hairdresser, ask to speak privately. TRich has become a little better known One thing I do, is to bring info, from the trich site with me and show it to the hairdresser, so they can understand better.
