Hello all! I think I have found where I need to be (LOL). Quick intro--I have 2 boys 10, 11. My youngest started showing tics around age 4. However, it never affected him physically or socially, so we just knew that this was a part of "Sam." Now we are entering pre-puberty and people are starting to notice, so we made the appointment with a child neuro doc to get the "official" diagnosis of Tourette's so we can begin meds....
Here's where I am needing some help! We started him on CLONIDINE (SP?--the medicine bottle is downstairs right now! forgive me...). Half tablet at night. After 3 weeks the doc said to start on morning half tablet. BIG MISTAKE. He was zoned out--not functioning--in other words, we lost our Sam. So, the doc recommended weaning him off that and now we are on FLUXOTINE (again, the spelling!!!) Which I believe is a type of PROZAC. So, I get a phone call today from the school to come to the school immediately--he was having a melt down of tears and crying and everything else. AAARRGGHHHHHHH!!!!! My husband and I are ready to give up on the meds, because the tics/OCD doesn't bother us! However, Sam is getting teased at school and wants to continue trying meds to help lower the tics....AND we have to respect our son's wishes... Has anyone had these results with the meds? We are going to continue on the FLUXOTINE and see what happens. However, I was curious to read about the fish oil--will try that. I plan to be on here a lot---thank you thank you thank you! Hello!
I am new here as well and just wanted to say Hello! It sounds like that medication wasn't the right fit for your son so maybe the doctor will try something else that will work better. I am guessing, like with many other medications that certain ones work better than others for certain people. Have you gone to the school and discussed his issues with the teachers and staff? I know there is a boy in my older daughters class (in a private school) that has a severe case of Tourettes (he never stops moving or speaking out) and he can't fully function in class (my daughter takes notes for him and he has an IEP). His mom has had professional speakers come to teacher meetings to help the staff understand the syndrome. Also, the students in his class have been educated about Tourettes so they understand what he is going through. I pray my son never has it as bad as this boy but I know the teachers will be more understanding if it does get that bad because of the education they have received. Good luck figuring this all out and keep us updated! Hugs to you and Sam!! Kristin
