Advice:
Risperdal emergency prescription?
Watch this
View More Posts
I commented in my journal that my daughter's new neurologist was going to give us a mild dose of Risperdal for her to use as a preventative during my sister's wedding. (She's a flower girl.) I've gotten two responses that cause me to question how wise this move is... As you all know, TS kids' behavior isn't always predictable or convenient. We can't afford her to have a break-down in the middle of the wedding.

So... Here's the question: WHAT SHOULD I DO??? It's not until October. Should I do a test run on the Risperdal? I know it's pretty strong stuff, but that's why we're pretty sure it'll work for the wedding; it's why she recommended it. Even then, being across the country in unfamiliar surroundings, with all the pre-wedding rush/stress around her...

HELP!!!!

" My son takes Risperdal 2mg 4 per day. It seems to have helped him. If it were my child and he had a time between now and a future important event that his tics were really bad I would use it before the event (following all doctor's recommendations). Did the doctor write to use it as needed or only at the wedding? If it is written as needed, I would use it the next time the tics were bad. "

" The prescription hasn't even been written yet. I'm sure she'd give me one now if I requested it. But I'm unsure if the test would really be accurate 'cause we're in the process of getting her tics under control. If all goes well, she won't get bad again before the wedding. And the wedding itself may trigger an exacerbation, not to mention all the other anxiety-related complications that will only increase her tics. "

" In this situation I think that I would ask the doctor if it would be ok to try it out ahead of time. "

" i have the trial prescription. I've decided to try it immediately. Hopefully, the TS is starting to wane, but I want to catch it before it improves too much on its own. Who knows if it'll get bad again before the wedding?! "

" We finally started the Risperdal trial on Fri (4 days ago). She takes 0.25 mg daily. The original idea was to take this small dose the week before the wedding. So we should see an improvement already... right?! Is it too early to tell, or should I increase the dose? The prescription is 1-3 times/day, but I don't want to increase it until I've given it enough time to work.

So, the real question now is: When your kids first took risperdal, how long did it take to see an improvement? We don't need drastic improvement, just to take the edge off.

I notice halstead64's son is taking a much larger dose... "

" He has been through so many medication changes that I can't remember exactly how long it took. He started on low doses also but was gradually increased as needed to help control the tics. I wish the best for you. "
