" FwIW worth I don't believe that tinnitus is inherited. I believe that certain traits/conditions can be passed down through generations and maybe a fault within the auditory mechanism might be included, but because members of ones family have/had tinnitus it does'nt mean that those down the line will get it. Tinnitus either temporary or permanent is so common and becoming more common with the advent of iPods and advances in accoustics. "

" Rosssu, Not to sound like it's a good thing that soo many have it, but think of it as a plus that you have all that experience with the condition around you to help you in your struggles. I too know a few people that have T, only finding out after I got it. It is good therapy to talk and realize that others have been successful dealing with T. God Bless.

" Inherited or not, I don't think the greatest medical minds can say (anything) for sure. My dad had it. He got it from the Korean war. I got it. I got it from pretending to be Hendrix, Clapton, and Nugent all in one in a garage band in the early 1980's. I was so good at the guitar that that all I got was a cool reputation from 1980 through 1984 (long forgotten) and tinnitus. The sad part is that I don't even really like music all that much. I just wanted to fit in and be cool. My son wanted to play drums in the school band. I believe my response was, "no explicit way". My three children all know about my T. Their ipods are played at low volume and they know not to stand near the speakers at a school dance. They never cut the grass without ear protection. I have a drill in the garage. If you press the start trigger lightly it makes an almost identical "eeeeeeeeee" sound to my T. I make this sound with this drill for my kids. They atleast have an inclination what T can sound like. I hope they really listen. Inherited or not, I'm not taking any chances. "
