Neurontin (Gabapentin) and Tinnitus

I have come across some tinnitus patients treated by their ENT with neurontin and found this article published in May 2006 in the Journal Laryngoscope and I wanted to post the results:
1) The study looked at the effectiveness of gabapentin (neurontin) in treating chronic tinnitus in two populations: a) people with tinnitus with associated acoustic trauma AND b) people with tinnitus without associated acoustic trauma. 2) Participants were restricted to those with moderate to severe tinnitus for at least 1 year and all participants received gabapentin for 20 weeks. 3) The conclusion (I wont post results for brevity) was that Gabapentin is effective in reducing subjective and objective aspects of tinnitus in some individuals, with the best therapeutic response obtained in individuals with associated acoustic trauma. Has anyone tried neurontin for tinnitus? Dr O. Posted on 02/07/07, 09:02 pm |

Yes. That is exactly what I am on now. I have been on many/many anti-depressents before. None worked. I wasn't depressed when I went on them, but the doctor insisted. Coming off all of them has been major disaster. I take Gabapentin 100 2 times a day and 3 at night. I take clonazepam 1mg 1/2 4 times a day. I have massive panic attacks. My two long term MD's say they are seizure. The neuorlogist with the headscan/ (can't think of the name) says there is no seizure activity. I had another one today. I have a bad one about once a week. It really drains you. I also take remeron to sleep. Also take lipoflavinoid. In three weeks he is going to switch me to Amatriptyline. Never give up, but I sure am sinking........

I am not taking neurontin for tinnitus, but have started taking it a year ago for other conditions and it hasn't had any effect positive or negative for the tinnitus. (Gabapentin 400mg one capsule twice daily and 2 capsules at bedtime)
Not sure of the terms describing Tinnitus so I'll just mention my own case: Tinnitus is about the volume of normal conversation and at a pitch something like the high E on a guitar sinusoidal though with beats so it must be a touch more complicated than a pure sinewave. A touch stronger in the left ear. I have had very many ear infections. My hearing is pretty good though now at 48 I sometimes have problems with some voices on TV. I wonder though if it isn't voices being masked by the tinnitus. LOL I also totally lose my balance if I tilt my head straight up and the look back horizontal. If I want to look up at something I want to make sure I can grab hold of something for when I look back down. It can be a bit of a trip if I am sitting in a sturdy arm chair. Better than spinning as a kid to get dizzy. LOL

I gave up a long time ago on trying to find something to make it lessen or get better. Nothing has worked at all for me. It just keeps on going constantly and some days it is so loud thats all I can hear, is that high pitch ringing in both ears. All I can do is keep a fan running.. or tv on.. or a radio.

No I have not tried Gabapentin for the treatment of Tinnitus because I take an MAOI which would be dangerous for me while taking MAOI
