TOS caused by cervical rib

I just found out that I have a cervical rib (extra rib in top of chest) on my right side that is causing my TOS. It compresses nerves and veins that are going to my right arm and hand. I have been to a Orthopedic Surgeon and he said that because it is a bone that is the issue, physical therapy would not help. He told me he would refer me to a Cardiothrorasic Surgeon and surgery would be the only option. In the surgery the cervical rib would be removed. However, he later found out that no one in this area (Tulsa, Oklahoma) does that surgery.

Does anyone else know anything about this and does it sound right that surgery is the only answer?

" Hi I'm not going to be much help but I've just had xrays and scans done to see if that is my problem-an extra rib the same as you in my right side. havent had the results yet. sorry I cant help.
I dont know what else they would be able to do except surgery !? I'm waiting to be referred to a vasculour surgeon because the bloodflow to my right arm is slow and when raised it completely stops.
thanks for posting this, hope you find some helpful info.
take care kay :) "

" Hi There! I did not have an additional cervical rib, but did have my top ribs on both sides removed due to venus TOS. My surgeon is from Denver and was FANTASTIC. He actually specializes in TOS cases and has done numerous surgeries. I really wouldn't trust anyone else after seeing some scary thoracic surgeons who told me they would do my surgery but had never done one before!! Here is is website: http://www.drbrantigan.com/ "

" Surgery unfortunately did not help. Be careful okay. Really do your homework. Had three different surgeries. Very reputable Dr's and hospitals...still no positive outcome. My hand looks skeletal and it is still tingling.

The surgery removed part of my C7, I also did decompression of my ulnar nerve, AND carpal tunnel release. All done in Michigan. Nothing helped. I just avoid having my arm bent for long periods of time. Post surgery my arm and hand looks very skinny and atrophy like. Try to avoid this expensive and unnecessary surgery, see a chiropractor, I didn’t and wish I did!! "

" It's your nerves that communicate to your brain - mixed signals and short circuits, damaged, nerves sending the wrong signal out.

You may find that the neuropathy group is of great help...

" I had a rib dissection done on my left side two weeks ago. I am doing good -- still am sore and not where I want to be. I am learning patience.

I had my right side done about 8 years ago and I had fantastic results. NO PROBLEMS. I have a wonderful neurosurgeon who has done both side. The scar on the right has faded away and you have to look to see it. The 3 week scar is doing great too.(i live in Provo, Ut)

This is a surgery you don't want to rush into. Try physical therapy -- when I tried it made it worse so my only option was surgery...it wasn't bad. I am better this week then the week before...it was a rough two weeks. Good luck. "
