Husband chokes eating food

My husband had neck surgery to repair 5 broken vertebraes, and he is healing up pretty good, except this accident is causing him trouble, whenever he eats, he chokes, because everything tries to go into his lungs, instead of his stomach. I would like to know why, or what is causing this to happen. It's been 7 months almost since his accident, I'm afraid he's going to choke to death and would like to know if this is a known condition
