Splint or no splint......splint broke, what now??

Hi, I have been suffering TMJ for about 2 years now and have been wearing a repositioning splint for a year and a half. Until a few days ago, I was wearing the splint 24/7 with little success of recovery.......I have been totally reliant on the splint for quite some time now, but 2 days ago my repositioning splint broke (the ramp snapped off) and I had to go cold turkey......no splint to rely on anymore. I ended up in the out patients with a locked jaw and was given a shot to alleviate the pain and discomfort. Since getting the shot, I am quite comfortable without the splint, but I am very worried that the joint will become damaged due to the still dislocated disc. I grind my teeth at night, therefore I am wondering if I should continue to wear the rampless splint to prevent the grinding or should I just buy a regular mouthguard available at Walmart. I don't know what to do......is the splint doing more damage or is it still helping me? Anyone who has gone through this problem, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Dear TMJ sufferer, I also have TMJ, and have had it now for about 14yrs. I had 2 surgeries, and still have ended up wearing a splint 24/7, and only take it out when I eat. Anyway, I had the splint in for 12yrs.and then about 2yrs. ago, I lost it in a restaurant. I was very anxious about not having it in and the pain I thought I would have. And could not afford a new one at all!! So, it has been about 2yrs. now, and I haven't had a splint in. And guess what?? I barely have anymore pain!!! Weird hey?? So, for me, I will not get another splint, and maybe this is meant to be for you also??? My daughter, has TMJ problems also, and she bought one of the splints not from Wal-Mart, but online somewhere, but I would think it would be as good as the one in Wal-Mart for overnight use. As my daughter grinds her teeth very badly throughout the nite. She gets alot of relief just from wearing it at nite. So, maybe what I have been through and my daughter, I hope will help you in some way. Good Luck, and try to keep smiling, hopefully without too much pain!!! Bye for now Sue

Hello,
I had a dislocated jaw and had a reposition spint put in and after all the muscles came forward and the jaw relaxed, the prostodontist put six crowns in to secure and center the jaw. I still have to wear a splint because I have torn discs. I was having to take botox injections every three months to stop the muscle cramping in my face, now I don't need it. I would try to get another splint, so the joint can heal and stay that way. Good luck, Kathy - California
