I've been diagnosed by an ENT specialist with muscle tension disorder. It's when my vocal folds don't come together, the left one bends a bit because of tension.
So, I have that "strangled voice" thing where I try to push my words and you can hear the tension. I'm 47 yrs old and I'm going to a speech therapist. I have a dry mouth alot. Because I get nervous, because I take Prevacid for my acid reflux. I've tried mouth sprays, nose sprays...you name it, I've tried it. Drinking water until I almost float. It's really isolating to have this. They say it's "Curable" with speech therapy...it's all about the breathing and learning to relax the throat muscles. My voice is always hoarse because of this. People ask me "are you sick?" alot. Or, "what's wrong with your voice?".....(I hate that one), I just tell them that, yeah...I've got a cold or something so that I won't have to go into details. Getting a job with this is SOO hard. I can't take any jobs where you need to talk alot. I'm PRAYING that this will get better with speech therapy because it's hard trying to talk all the time while straining. Anybody else have something similar? Posted on 05/09/08, 04:05 am |

Hi. I have also been diagnosed with MTD (combined with vocal cord weakness) by an ENT specialist. I have had speech therapy which has really helped me. I had to do exercises such as 'mmmmm', 'eeeeee', 'ooooo' at a lower pitch, as my voice was too high. Mine was caused by repetitive colds and viruses and my cords could no longer handle it. I had the hoarseness for three months.
My voice is not perfect and in some situations it still goes for some reason, but I can now work and socialise without feeling silly or people asking me silly questions!! I hope you get sorted as people who've not experienced it do not take it seriously or realise the impact on daily life, which is like a vicious circle.
