Ok, so some of you know about my recent adrenal crisis due to quitting smoking...
WELL... I can't have any sweets now. Great, huh? OH...especially black licorice! That was the ONE thing that took my craves away...especially while driving in traffic. But black licorice stimulates the adrenals, so no go! The cortisol issue is also making my blood sugar go crazy so I have to be all about the protein and no simple carbs (sugars). Yeah, like a boiled egg or handful of nuts is gonna chase my craves away! Just had to vent. It's just my luck. Anyone who knows me knows I have the WORST luck. Nothing ever goes right for me, no matter how hard I try or how thoroughly I plan. Too funny! Posted on 07/24/08, 02:07 pm |

Thanks Kelly...you're sweet :) I'm not really upset...just kind of venting in a joking way. I had to go COMPLETELY sugar free a year and a half ago for a month (not even canned tomatoes with sugar in them, and no carbs of any sort). It was a challenge, but it's doable...and I lost 20lbs during that month! I am grateful that I've been able to endure all this stuff the last 10 days and NOT cave in :)
As far as sugar free sweets, well, yes and no. They have found that the body does react to some sugar substitutes as if it were sugar. Plus, due to my health issues I have been eating pretty much organic/natural for 1 1/2 years...which means trying to avoid chemicals. Also, with some sugar free stuff if you eat too much of it, you will get really sick and be in the bathroom a lot (if you know what I mean!). So, if I get absolutely desperate, I might try a few...otherwise, I'm gonna just stick to the protein as advised :) I'll be fine. It just sucks cuz black licorice really worked for my cravings, but he said absolutely NO to that. Guess I'll just have to tough it out :) Hopefully I'll lose the weight I've gained since I stopped smoking and the adrenal crisis happened! woo hoo!

Deb, you are too kind :) Thank you for your support!
And Kelly, I think the Sprouts down the street (where I shop) has the sugar free black licorice and other candies. I might get some, just in case I have an "emergency" moment...otherwise, I'm gonna try to be really strong.

Have you tried aniseed? It has a flavor very similar to licorice. I believe it is the flavoring in black jellybeans.
Blessings to you, Joy. Shevie

Oh, what a let down! No licorice? Anisette was a good suggestion. How about fennel? Got a plant by the front door, care to try a twig?
