Obstructed airways.....

Has anyone been sent to an Ear nose and throat specialist to make sure they don't have any obstructions in the nose? My friend that has sleep apnea doesn't breathe through his nose, he is a mouth breather when naping without the CPAP machine.

Since the CPAP machine puts air into your nose, I would think if you have blockage in your nose, deviated septum, or polps or something blocking the airways, the CPAP wouldn't work as well you would get less air....

My friend is going to get an appointment to see an ENT to see if this could be happening. He does not seem to be sleeping well with the machine, and it is set very high. He also wakes up many times per minute when he was tested.

Any opinions would be appreciated....
Thank you all...

" Yep (full face mask)FFM makes sense to me! Anyone who has nasal polyps, deviated septums or deformities in their nose would probably benefit from using the CPAP with a FFM. "

" Thank you for your reply kelltress2, You must have ben ent to an ENT did you ask your doctor or did he just sentd you? I think all people with sleep apnea should be checked for obtructions in the nose, if you did get it corrected it will help anyone breath better.
They never suggested the full face mask to be friend just pillows and the hybrid.. I will check into the full face mask he only sleeps 5 to 6 hours a night sometimes less.

Sounds as if your going to a great hospital UCSF, I am glad they figured that out.

Thanks for your reply......

" I just went to the ENT for this. Came out diganosed with clogged sinuses, TMJ, and a damaged vocal chord from a previous throat biopsy. My lung doctor sent me to an ENT to see if it had anything to do with my apnea. I havent went for a full sleep study yet, he just sent an O2 monitor for me to wear on my finger at night for 3 nights, and every night my oxygen levels went below 85 for more than 8 minutes at a time. I am now going for a sleep study and probably will have to have some type of cleaning out of my nasal and sinus cavities before using the CPAP machine. Although my doctor says once I get it, I will sleep like a baby and feel more rested in the morning. Which I hope is true, but from reading people's posts on here CPAP's seem to be aggravating. Dont know. Hope all goes well with your friend. "
