Dry Eyes & Ease of using mask
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
Hi. I'm writing for my 80-year old Dad who is using a full-face CPAC. Dad is confused at times on how to put on the mask, and he has large stubby fingers which make pulling the straps thru the slots is almost impossible.

Lately he has said that the mask is "blowing air" at his eyes (he suffers from severe dry eyes) and this is making him use the CPAC less and less.

Any suggestions on any other masks, techniques to put on the mask, or suggestions for the blowing air? I'm concerned the mask is not fitting properly but getting a new mask is a challenge - the nearest facility is at least 60 miles away.

Also Dad is a mouth breather and he refused to use the chin strap.

I'd like to get him comfortable using the mask - his mental acuity is much better when using the Cpac.

Thanks,

" I too experience the blowing into the eyes on occassion. It is in adjusting the tightness and placement of the mask. Unfortunately, it has to be fairly tight in order to avoid this. At least for me.I have a mirage full face mask. there are four places to adjust the straps on mine. However, once I have them adjusted the first time I do not have to readjust it again. Mine has the velcro straps, but also has these little clip/clasping parts. I am able to undo only one of these and can then slip in and out of the entire thin, by only unfastening the one clasp. (I am sorry this sounds so confusing) Also, placement of the mask on the length of the face also matters. It is unfortuate that it is so far away for you to seek help with this. This is definitely something I think every new user goes through. My doctors had to give me anti-anxiety pills and sleeping pills to take until I became acclimated to the mask. I have COPD and Heart Failure on top of the Sleep Apnea. I was told if I want to live then I have no choice but to wear the mask. It has been over a year now and I so just fine with it. (I cannot say I love it, but I do sleep alot better) Hope this has helped at least a little. JoAnn "

" I agree with breatheasy. It is VERY important to be sure the mask is fitted properly. The air in his eyes is diffinately due to the mask leaking on the top. If he is not able to adjust the mask himself then he is not going to use it probably. It may just be worth the 60 mile trip to get this resolved. Remember once he is comfortable with the mask he will be much more apt to continue to use it. "

" my husband and I both have sleep apnea. And the others are right. It blows the air into your eyes when it's not tight enough. My husband is also a mouth breather and he would refuse to wear the mask because he said it was uncomfortable. We finally got him fitted for the right mask and he doesn't wear a chin gaurd and he and I both sleep alot better. God Bless "

" Thank you all for your comments. You don't know how much I appreciate your time and concern to write your thoughts. Both my Mom and I think that it will just take time for him to remember how to properly fasten the mask. We're all supportive and he's trying diligently . . . thanks again for your kindness. Care "
