Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing for a period of 10 seconds or longer...there are 3 things that make up your severity for sleep apnea....your obstructive apneas caused by blocking of your airways.....your central apneas which is when your brain does not signal your body to breathe and your hypopneas which is when airflow to your lungs is reduced to 50% or more and your oxygenation level drops 3%. With these 3 things they come up with your AHI (Apnea Hypopnea Index) (CALCULATION)---
0-5 is normal, 5-15 is mild, 15-30 is moderate and anything greater than 30 is severe.
If left untreated it causes, headaches, depression, extreme fatigue, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, going to the bathoom frequently at night, sweating, waking up not refreshed, dreamless sleep.....I could go on forever.....
