Hello

My name is Dona, I was Recently diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea two weeks ago.I will be 41 intwo months. This is the first time i have ever heard of Sleep apnea.

There are days when I'm just too tired to do anything physical. I thought it was related to some of my medications, or my high blood pressure, and the fact that I'm a big person.

I've always a person that got up early and only slept for 2 to 4 hours a night. I'm exhausted some days for know reason. I wake up at 3am ready to take on the world. I wake up multiple times during the night and I'm stiff when I wake up,but I think it's because my body just getting old. My husband told me I snore, I said I don't, but then my kids said I do also. I don't know anything about OSA. I would like to know how everyone deal with this? i have been order a CPAP. which I don't like the ideal about sleepy wiht all that gear on me. I hate sleeping on my back. Is there anything else other then a CPAP?
Does this get better with CPAP? Will I be on a CPAP for the rest of my life? Do being over weight have anything to do with this? My doctor has not call me nor giving me any info. If you can please share with me I would love to hear from you. Thanks for your time

" Hey there, thought I would bump this to get noticed.

Anyways, sorry you are suffering soo much. My husband has had sleep apnea for almost 10 years now. He has had it since 16 years old. He is 24 now. There is a surgery they can do where they cut excess flesh out of the throat. He actually had that done before the CPAP was prescribed. It didnt work. He has been struggling with the CPAP for about 4 years. Tried many masks. He is finally able to use it all night but not finding relief.

I would say try all the masks you can. Full face, nasal pillows, just mouth, etc etc. Look into surgery, perhaps it may work for you. Weight loss does help. Stay close to Daily strength and people will help you.

TAKE CARE,
JBEAN "

" First, sleep apnea is a pretty widespread problem.. I've had it for about 8 years now, but had been having sleep problems for years before I was diagnosed. Looking back, it seems I might have had it during those earlier times. Don't worry about the CPAP machine. You can get used to it. Besides having the mask on, the sound of the machine takes some getting used to but it won't take long. And you don't have to sleep on your back all the time. I sleep on my side(both sides) and there's enough tubing for it not to be a problem. I had a good side affect to the machine. I'd been suffering from depressions, getting bouts about six times a year. When I got on the machine, they went away for the most part. When I told my doctor, he said that, apparently, the extra oxygen getting to my brain with the machine had helped. So hang in there. You'll start feeling better in a little while and you'll get used to the machine. "

" Dona:

Some of your symptoms sound just like mine. I thought mine was due to medication, too. I'm so sore and stiff when I wake up, you'd think I exercised all night in my sleep.

When I specifically asked my husband about my sleep--he admitted that I've always stopped breathing for a little while and I snored. (I denied the snoring.) Like most people, he assumed if I started breathing again, I was OK. Sometimes he used to wake me up only to find out I was angry he woke me up for what I thought was nothing. He was actually checking on me and making sure I was OK.

My sister, who has SA, asked me a startling, but very simple question the other day. "Do you have sheet wrinkles when you wake up?" Well, I thought and couldn't remember the last time I slept in one position so long that I actually had sheet wrinkles. She said her doctor told her that a very large number of people who suffer from SA don't have the sheet wrinkles because they're restless or unknowingly reposition themselves when they wake up, but they usually don't remember it. Made a world of sense to me. I think the last time I had sheet wrinkles was when I was in high school--30 years ago. "

" Thanks foxysdad and tiredalld. I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing better. Has anyone ever been taking off the CPAP because they start to get better? I have always thought that on the nights I did get to sleep that I slept very well. I never knew that I stop breathing untill I had the test done. That really scare me to hear that. In I'm actually all over the bed at night. I sometimes have fights with my sheets:) I do rememer the deep sleep I once had as a child. I wish I could get that back some day. Do everyone sleep with there CPAP on everytime they lay doen to go to sleep, take a nap etc. ? "

" If I'm just going to nap and don't expect to sleep for more than an hour, I don't use the mask. But if I'm going to bed for my regular sleep cycle, the mask goes on., There have been times when my nose was so stopped up that I couldn't use the mask. During those times I try to elevate my head and shoulders and it makes it easier to sleep. I worry a lot about my nose because of the mask, almost to the point of being obsessive compulsive about keeping it clear. I have Breath Right strips on hand for times when I can't get it clear enough. "
