This is important for all of us to remember:
1) A recent study of 3,542 patients FREE of atrial fib who were referred for sleep studies found that during a mean 4.7-year follow-up the incidence of new-onset atrial fibrillation was 14%. 2) A study in 2003 showed the risk of recurrence of atrial fibrillation in the year following cardioversion in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was cut in half by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) at night therapy 3) The correlation between obstructive sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation is so strong that some cardiologists obtain sleep studies before they perform ablation procedures to make sure their patients dont have sleep apnea Take home message: Find and treat sleep apnea to prevent occurrence of A-fib Dr O. Have there been any studies on SA and PVC's? I'm 49, had 3 cardiac stents 18 months ago (one occluded in Nov) and have had frequent PVC's--especially when I lay down at night. For years, I've been told my PVC's were benign. Now, I'm not so sure.
I'm only about 30 lbs overweight, I quit smoking, I try and watch what I eat, I'm exhausted, I have PVC's pretty much all day, but they increase to a bigeminy pattern when I lay down. I've tried to exercise, but I'm so worn out, that my heart rate shoots up after about a minute or so. I know I'm out of shape, but I don't want to do more harm than good. Any advice?

Dr. Oorange, I have atrial fib and sleep apnea. I also believe I have something else going on with my breathing. Was diagnosed with mild OSA and sent home with a Bi-PAP and sleep med to help adjust to the mask. As I drop off to sleep, my breathing becomes very shallow with too long a time between breaths. Should I have a repeat study at the sleep clinic? What questions should I ask the nurse practioner I see? Do you think I need a CPAP instead of Bi-PAP machine? Would also appreciate hearing from any out there who experience this problem. Thanks for your help.
