Going out alone...

So I'm shy as all hell and I need some advice. I'm thinking of going to an Al-Anon meeting tonight by myself and I don't know anyone there. None of my friends are available tonight to come with me.

Then in a couple weeks I start a school program where I know maybe one other person... I'm nervous and anxious and excited... but mostly scared right now.

I am debating whether or not to go to this meeting. It's either that, or sit at home with an actively alcoholic father. Or I could find something else to do alone outside like going shopping but I have no money...

" Try maybe going for a jog? Or go to the library and read a bit... And, hey, I go shopping without money all the time, just think of all the money you'll save! "

" I definitely would try to attend your meeting. If you need help, who you go with should not matter. Parks are great places to go. Maybe a stroll with a dog, if you have one. Good luck with this. "

" Al-anon is a great place for you to go. I think you will find that even if it is hard to go, people will reach out to you and be very friendly. Take a risk and force yourself to go. It sure beats sitting at home with your father and will help you very much. Good luck and hugs to you. "

" In the recent past I attended an anxiety support group for the first time. I was nervous REALLY nervous before I went. I knew the support group could potentially help me so I sucked it up and went. For the second and third meetings I was less nervous. Now I look forward to the meetings.

You can do it too. :-) "

" I went to the meeting. It was really nice, actually. Thanks for your suggestions. Today I may take a walk with the dog, or go to the library, or just go walk around the mall... WITHOUT my credit card! It's not that easy for me to leave the house, especially alone lately, but I'm working on it... "

" Humor. Humor is a great anecdote for breaking the ice meeting anyone new. Makes them feel comfortable, makes you feel comfortable. Watch a funny movie, listen to comedians. "

" I highly recommend Al Anon. I am so grateful to have checked out several meetings several times - the personality of the meeting changes from time to time and from place to place - they are all unique.

Going out alone is quite often more fun for me, being overly independent and wanting to do things my way, and it easier to meet others this way sometimes because you are free from distraction or having to go along with someone else. "
