Overcoming my shyness

I am a 20 year old male college student who is severly overweight. My whole life I have been put down, and never had any real friends. My best friend told me I should join a self help group and I came here. My problem is whenever I try and talk to people, they ignore me and it makes me so upset. I don't really know how to talk to people. If you would like to know more just ask. Thanks

" Yeah, I'm stubborn too. You know what's worked for me? I bought a couple books a few years back on social networking and practiced my social skills. It worked! I bet it can work for you too. "

" i just read a book called, living fully with shyness and social anxiety, it is helping alot. i've noticed lately that when i think that people aren't listening to me it's because of the way i talk, i'm a very shy person and have a soft gentle voice so i am practicing speeking louder and try to sound a little more confident even when i don't feel that way. a friend of mine tells me to act as if i am confident even if i don't feel it and eventually i will. good luck, keep coming back "

" You almost have to bulldoze your way through a conersation! I know, it's hard, but being "intllectually assertive" goes a long way. Sometimes you have to make your voice the loudest and most intelligent in the group, I know. And sometimes it's OK to just listen! You don't have to be the center of attention all the time, y'know...
