Going it alone

Hi All!

Does anybody else have problems with going places alone? I often feel like I want to go do something, but I feel a bit aimless. I feel like if I had somebody to call up and invite, I'd feel less shy about going and doing things. But then how do you get the friends except by going places and meeting people!

" I'm in an awkward place myself where I don't have many people close to me so the only way people will be close to me ever again is if I venture out on my own. It can be scary but I try to keep in mind all the positive people and experiences I can bring into my life.

Try joining a group or organization. That way you'll start to become familiar with the people each time you go to an event. "

" I venture out on my own once in awhile. I like go to Border's bookstore to read, or write or browse and get a cup of coffee. Though lately, I've been pushing my comfort zone and have at least one good friend I go out with occassionaly to "practice" those essential social skill I'm a little rusty in :) "

" Oh I was thinking about Borders....But that's the one place I feel so freaky about! haha I picture myself siting there with a cup of coffee- and doing what? Just sitting at a table by my little lonesome? everybody else seems to have a place to be or a thing to do, and there I am, at a loose end! I always feel like I stick out like a sore thumb, like I must be waiting for a bus or something! This is weird but I think I have to work myself up to it! And what's the pay off anyway? Just more single shots of coffee? I always think I could just as well sit home with a book and a coffee. "

" I have a tough time going someplace alone especially if it is a social function. Places I do love going alone are book stores and museums...places I can just get "lost" in.

A few years ago I had a friend that gave me her Sting concert ticket because she couldn't go....I wanted to go so bad but didn't because I couldn't bring myself to go alone...not to a concert! "

" Wendy, Have you ever tried meetup.com? There are all types of activities organized through this site. When you attend a meetup it's usually people like us who are looking to mingle and socialize. I found a social anxiety group through this site. "

" I guess the best way would be to just go up to people in the street and impress them by making out that you're already really popular lol.

Unfortuneatly I think everyone needs a support system first before they can begin to effectively 'filter' through the general public.

And you have my support if that helps at all :) "

" I go out alone all the time. I used to have a couple friends to go to the movies with, but we've had a falling out, because their relationship with each other is so abberated that I got sick of hearing about their latest, greatest drama that I sort of said "don't call me anymore to tell me about this".

Yes, it does feel a bit aimless at times to go out alone, but I ride places on my bike, so I know my heart has a direction, and that direction is keeping myself healthy. In my peddle-powered travels, I drop by bars, go to movies, wherever! No shame in going somewhere alone! And, who knows, you might make friends with someone while you're there! "
