" Scoliosis is nothing to be ashamed of. Many more people than you may realize have or know of someone who has had it.
Have you seen a Doctor yet? They will give you lots of stuff to read and understand more about scoliosis. There are many great people on this website for support also. "

" well if they are true friends they will be supportive. And yes she can still live a normal life. I dance and cheerlead, swim, tumble, ride horses no one even knows unless i tell them, or they see my scar. I only have 6 unfused vertebra too! "

" My daughter is 4 weeks since her surgery and
she is already feeling better. Surgery is a very hard thing to think about for your child, especially one like this but if you have a good Doctor, he can make you reassured and feel better. The other option of not having the surgery can be worse. There are many people who are living with scoliosis and can tell you how difficult it can be.
I am happy we made the decision of surgery as hard as it was to think about. There are many people living a normal life after surgery with all the activities kids like to do including sports.
I wish you the best of luck... please write with your worries/concerns anytime. People on here are great support "

" Just tell them! It's NOT a death sentence like cancer, and it's NOT contagious! What do you fear? That they'll desert you like you're a freak? Stop worrying! I'm 16, I've had scoliosis all my life, and I have great friends, even though I'm confined to a wheelchair most of the day. Everyone I meet soon finds out I have scoliosis...All I've ever done is say "I have scoliosis." If they don't know about it, I explain. Frankly it's cool to be able to teach kids your own age something:) But you and they need to know it's not like you're saying, "Hi, I have scoliosis and I'm going to die tomorrow."
Just tell your friends, sweetie. Don't think you need to sugarcoat it. "

" I found out I had scoliosis when I was 13. I definitely know how you feel. I am now 22. But when I found out I was kind of embarrassed at first and didn't want my friends to see my back at all because of what they might say. But when I did tell them I just had to explain that my spine was curved, thats all. I told them that alot of people have it and there's not anything you can do to prevent it. They all thought it was cool. They wanted to see it after that and were all very supportive. Even tho it might make you feel weird at first, it definitely isn't. Just make sure you do exactly as your doctor tells you. I used to have to wear a brace for 23 hrs a day and I didn't wear it as much as I should've thats for sure. Now I am going to be undergoing corrective surgery on Sept 12th. If you have any questions feel free to contact me anytime. Hope you feel better!! :-) "

" i really understand how you feel. i am 29yrs old and i have had scoliosis all my life and i could only start talking about it a year ago. it was only my mum that knew i couldn't even share it with sisters and brother talkless of friends. i was so embreassed by it. 3yrs ago i meant this nice GP at my surgery, she was the person i was able to confired in and she referef me to the specialist. i have come to realise that it's nothing to be ashamed of. i will advise to tell those that really need to know. good luck.
