Problems caused by scoliosis.

I have scoliosis since I'm 13 and now I'm 16. The problems I faced (which I know most of the scoliosis patients suffer too) are:

a) Unable to wear tight shirts/top
b) Have back ache (sometimes)
c) My self-esteem have decreased
d) Have to always remeber to stand and sit straight
e) Not daring to bend down (afraid that others might notice)
f) Became a weaker person in sports (breathing problems and lower stamina)
g) Easily feel giddy in crowded or high place
h) Unable to do sit-up (always got laughed by my classmates, though I know they don't mean it 'cos they do not know about my back prob)

I think there's more but couldn't recall them. I hope that you, who are reading this, could share your problems or solutions to solve them here. Thanks in advance. =D

" I go to an acupuncturis and osteopath. I also have a lift to help correct my curve. I have started yoga/pillatie and it is nice. They gave me a streatch to streatch out the curve.......it feels so nice. It won't correct the curve of course but it is nice.

My problem is not being able to lift over 25 lbs, no lifting over my head, finding dress shoes that have no to little heel and can have a lift added to it. "

" I have just started yoga and I like it. I was told to find a yoga teacher who specializes in back care and or scoliosis. I don't have a rod and have not had surgery. I have a 20 to 25 degree curve, s and c curve, and arthritis going into the curve of my spine. I would consult your back doc before you do it. My Osteopath, Acupuncturist and psychologist all said go do it. So I did. I have only had 2 visits and am working on finding a big enough spot in our one bedroom apt to do it. Feel free to message me to ask questions or just to get to know ya, or me I should say. :) "

" Hmm.... some other problems.
1) Having a curve that pushes down on bladder causing some rather embarrassing incidents until I learned to.... well, to go to the bathroom more often!
2) Having to explain my scar again and again and again. (On the plus side, you can come up with a lot of different ways of talking about it. And you realize that most people don't actually notice that you have a curve - mine's 40 degrees and twisted ... don't know the term for that .... and even after they've been told about it they usually forget .... so you get to tell them again... it's not as noticeable as you think).
3) Finding comfortable chairs. Hard backs hurt because of the twist.
I haven't noticed any sports related difficulties. . . I can still do sit ups - maybe not the right way, but I can get crunches in. There's also this thing called a pelvic tilt you might want to look up that they recommended in physical therapy (you may want to try some physical therapy even if you haven't had surgery so that you can learn what sorts of exercises are good for you).
4)! Getting angry instead of relaxed during group yoga when they ask "does anyone have any back problems" and tell me I can't do certain things when I'm the sort of person who needs to feel I can do anything.
that said, it was kind of nice having high school gym teachers treating me like I would break so not making me do everything.... even if it had nothing to do with things affected by my back....
Oh - and shirts.... I wear 'em anyway(tight ones that is - of course I wear shirts!), but it is tricky to find a nice cut. I like the boat cut personally - it shows of shoulders and sort of draws attention away from the back (except, in my case, for an enticing bit of scar)

I hope that helped. Thanks for your topic. It's not so bad really.... "

" hi mangorosee..it's good to know that not all scoliosis patients can't do sit-ups. I'm just kinda fed up of hearing what people say about "oh, she can't do sit-up," when i asked them to demo a few rounds for me. It hurts seriously. Well, maybe they don't really mean it. "

" I had scoliosis when I was a child and the curgery when I was 16. Problems didn't rear their ugly head until many years later.... had 2 children naturally but it went down from there. Now I can't sit for more than 5 minutes without incredible pain. My pain goes away for a day or so here or there, but is pretty much there all the time. I am just trying to deal with it all on a daily basis. Now my little girl is faced with the exact same problem. UGH. Solutions? Hmm, haen't really found many except pain killers which are addictive and no good for you. Cortisne shots, physical therapy, muscle relaxers, etc... all failed miserably. "

" im still in pain i went to my gp and they told me my scoliosis had gotten worse so there was alot of crying especially as the pain has gotten worse too. I can only lie on 1 side when i sleep the other 1 hurts so badly. When I was at school i wore a brace and ppl used to look at me when i got changed for P.E. I was picked on too and I was never a horrible person except to those who bullied me. Anyway I cant ride a motorbike cause it hurts my neck, my back is on the point where it feels so sore that clothes irritate it. I dont know whats going on inside me and I want to cry because im so worried in pain all the time and it's getting worse. Shooting pains down my back. I cried cause I cant go in the car for a few hours to the beach and ive been wanting to go on holiday for ages. Im too afraid to go to somewhere busy like a club incase anyone knocks my back and i dont want to go out or do anything. Im miserable to put it mildly. I think my curve has changed cant even sit without it hurting. Oh well im going to go eat now. Its nice knowing other ppl out there understand this. I would like to know if anyone has had or is having anything similar to what im experiencing (burning pain, pain all over body) "
