Venflaxine (effexor) casued schizophrenic syntoms

Hi
About 3 years ago i started taking a antidepressant called venflazine, over time despite lifting my mood some
i developed schizophernic type syntoms - racing thoughts, intrusive thoughts, feeling of being unsettled irritability, ianiblity to think clearly and severe restlessness amongst other things

My syntoms only started when i started taking the antidepressant: venlafaxine (effexor) and proceeded to get worse when i when i was placed on an increased dose (75mg), My doctor however has rued out a connection but i am inclined to think otherwise

I wonder if i would be treated any other away apart form with anti-pychotics if my doctor belived that it was in fact caused by this seemingly harmless antidepressant !?

I would love to know if anyone else has felt that this drug may have caused further mental health problems for them.

" I had it along with lithium and ended up in hospital bcos I was too happy for them (docs). I am now taking lamitrogene (lamictal). when I am depressed I am not a problem to them, but when I look or act at all happy I am seen as hypo....I dont know how to behave..... I do believe that effexor can make you high as a kite.....but when you get there you are at risk of being locked up for being too happy....my experience... "

" WOW! I had a very similar experience with effexor. I never heard voices until I went on it. Then I started hearing a voice telling me to harm myself. I ended up attempting suicide. While I was in the hospital for 3 months following that I was taken off the effexor however the schizo symptoms have never completely gone away. I have periods of remission and relapse now. But yeah it seems like the effexor triggered a predisposition of sorts. "

" I have schiz and the effexor made things so much worse. I just told my doc I wasnt gonnatake it coz I couldnt handle the side effects and even tho he wasnt happy with it, we weaned me off it and Im on lexapro now as an antidepressant.

Are you stil on Effexor? If so, can yo try weaning yourself off (it might help, but dont stop taking it straight away costhats not good) If you arent still on Effexor and you still getting symptoms, idk, maybe you could go see another doc? They all human so they not perfect (hence, they not all gonna be the same or have the same ideas and they aint always right)]

Idk if this will help, just an idea. "

" Trust yourself on this one. And consult another doctor about this issue PLEASE. I have heard that people with schizoaffective disorder (similar to schizophrenia) can be made worse by SSRI antidepressants at times (because they need mood stabilizers instead).

Nevertheless, if it makes you worse, whatever the cause, you shouldn't be made to take it. If you still need an antidepressant, you could take wellbutrin instead, which is a different class of antidepressant altogether and functions completely differently.

Don't let a doctor's bad decision become your personal nightmare. Besides, psychosis might cause some chemical brain damage (according to some scientists), so minimizing it is the best thing to do no matter what. "
