Returning to work?

I am curious, I am 1 month out of my PE and still have not returned to work. I am currently on short-term disablility leave because as the doctor stated, I still take pain medications when I feel pain. I can't drive and work if I am on pain medication....well duh.
How long was it until you decided to return to work? My job currently is shift work in front of a computer for 12 hour shifts. I have the chance to move around and walk around at times, but mostly monitor what is happening on the computers. The shift work is a weekly day shift one week and the nights the next. Hi there,
I know you had said before that your work didn't offer any kind of modified duties ... but what about shorter shifts? I, too sit in front of a comupter for most of the day, and even though my company's "official" work day is 6.25 hours, we are all here at least 8 if not 10 hours. I was back at work my normal 10 hour day about 10 days post-PE which I think was too soon - was really hurting that first week. I cut my hours down to the 6.25 for about a week and felt much better (physically). I wonder about that night shift though ... is there any way they would let you do days only? For me, soooo much of how I feel depends on good quality sleep. If I don't sleep well, I really hurt. I just took a quick peek at a website saying that the ADA requires that TX employers make "reasonable" accommodations for employees with disabilites, but the ADA only protects employees with permanent disabilities. Then I found another website that has a section of the labor code that does not seem to make this distinction b/t permanent disability vs. temporary disability. Check it out: http://law.onecle.com/texas/labor/... Good luck!

Oh, shuold have said that the "reasonable" accommodations included shorter shifts as long as it wasn't an "undue burden" to the employer.

I just want to thank everyone again for being so supportive and loving.... I would not have made it through this ordeal- reading all of these posts have been mostly comforting! Regarding work for me.... I am a personal fitness trainer and expected to be on my feet the entire time and demonstrating exercises. I work at a very nice health club that is more like a country club. I am six weeks out from PE and have not gone back to work. When I stand for too long.... I start getting pains in my left lung and my heart rate goes up and oxygen saturation goes down (96-98%).
It doesn't help that I have anemia in addition to the pulmnary embolism.... I'm praying that when my anemia gets better that my recovery from the PE will speed up. It's difficult for me because I am only paid when I train people.... so I am living off my small amount of savings. It's a very stressful and scary time as a single parent- especially in this bad economy. I wish I could be more helpful, but thanks for letting me post my thoughts :)
