Hi there,
I have a trip coming up in August to fly from California to London. I was really trying for a flight that had a substantial layover in NY or Canada so that I could break up the flight and walk around the airport, but the non-stop wound up being my only option, sadly (and the cheapest - go figure!). The coumadin clinic advised that traveling should not be a problem since my INR has been stable since the PE 5 weeks ago, and they are now thinking of limiting my blood draws to once every 8 weeks anyway (I'll be in London for about 6 weeks). My issue is that I'll be really anxious having traveled that far without having my INR checked while I'm there. I'm wondering if there is any place that I can go in order to have my INR checked? If I'm not a national, can I still utilize a clinic run by the NHS? If anyone knows, I'd be grateful for your response - thanks! Posted on 07/12/08, 09:07 pm |

Hi.... from sunny (well actually not so sunny) UK, to be honest I'm not sure although I've read lots of other posts from people who have travelled in Europe and gone to private clinic for INR draw. If you are travelling to stay with family/friends I think it is possible for you to see a GP in UK... just as a temporary patient if you are staying with anyone they could check out before you travel. If it's business and this doesn't apply I am sure there will be a private option (not through the National Health Service)but they might do it and charge? It might be something your travel ins company could advise on - I'm sure there's a solution.....

Thanks so much! It's actually half-biz, half-vacation, and I don't mind paying for it myself (the peace of mind will be worth it). I just didn't know if a clinic in the UK would be ok with me just setting up an appointment and walking in? Here in the States they demand your insurance card right up front, or if you don't have insurance, they practically put a lein on your house in order to prove that you can pay for any services. Um ... national health care, anyone? (Just kidding - don't want to start THAT debate in an otherwise happy, healthy, stress-free zone!)
Thanks again!

hey there, ooo i hope you have a great time over here!!
hmm im not 100% sure, so prob no point in me writing this post!! (silly) but I know that as a brit, every hospital has a walk in blood draw clinic. (cant remember the name of the clinic, i think its just the pathology lab) i can literally walk into any hospital in the country without an appointment, take a ticket with a number, and wait for the number to be called. the ask for things like your NHS number and GP. and obviously as you wont have an NHS number or GP in the UK, they will ask you some other details. Where abouts in london are you staying? I'd be happy to contact some of the hospitals for you and make some enquiries if that would help?

shyla,
Oh,I know I will have a good time! London is definitely my favorite city (tied for 1st place with San Francisco)! I'll actually be in one of two places, either the office working (ugh), literally right next to the Tower of London, or at home (and much happier) in Abbey Wood. If it's not too much trouble, just knowing where a blood draw clinic is would be great - I don't mind paying; just need to know if they'll take me. Actually, my INR went haywire this past week (low), so now I absolutely have to get checked every two weeks while I'm over there,so I'll just need to find someplace that can fax the results back to my "Coumadin Clinic" people. Don't go to too much trouble, tho - if you're just able to throw out a few names of places, or if they have websites, then I can contact them. Thanks soooooo much! :o)

You can defo go to any hospital, the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead in London has an excellent INR clinic...you won't have to pay...if you feel concerned just go to any hospitals a&e and explain you have had a PE, you've recently flown and are concerned, you may have to wait a while to be seen but they will check you out.
Have a lovely time and try not to let it play on your mind too much, you know you're body and it will tell you if there is something wrong...keep an eye out for swelling etc... x
